What we aim to solve

Heart Disease Prevention Institute was established to measure the Heart Disease preventing effect of providing impoverished families a diet that is predominately Fruits and Vegetables thru a food assistance program providing only fruits and vegetables. Because these families are dependent on the Fruits and Vegetables that are provided them. This unique situation will allow us to do a long term study of the Heart Disease prevention effects of a diet rich in Fruits and Vegetables. Scientific research concludes that the best diet for preventing Heart Disease is one that is low in fat and high in vegetables and fruits. Overall, most Heart Disease could be prevented.

Heart Disease Prevention Institute provides Medical Supplies to Organizacion Christiana De Beneficio Social Esperanza De Vida Children's Hospital (St. Lukes) which serves over 12,000 patients annually with services provided 24 hours every day: these supplies are used in providing medical care for their Baby Rescue program where 3,000 children on the brink of starvation are brought to the St. Lukes Hospital annually. These sick children are found in some of the most remote areas of Guatemala and are transported by burro, canoe and truck. Many stay at the St. Lukes Nutritional Center for weeks, others are abandoned by their parents and are given a home in the children's home, and some have dire needs that they must be sent to far away hospitals in an effort to save their lives.

This activity includes obtaining excess Food from Food Brokers. We will develop relations with food Brokers and obtain their excess food that though it is nutritionally good it can not be marketed because of lack of demand. As it is costly to them to have to haul it to the landfill and pay dumping fees they will gladly ask us to pick it up from them.
