What we aim to solve
Solving for Sustainability -- advancing the environmental and economic health of the Great Lakes region.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Circular Great Lakes
In the Great Lakes economic region, which spans eight states, from New York to Minnesota, it is estimated that 80% of the region’s post-consumer waste is lost to landfills, including valuable materials like plastic packaging and films. Worse, studies estimate that roughly 20 million pounds of plastic pollution could be entering the Great Lakes, one of the largest surface freshwater systems in the world, through a variety of sources and pathways.
Shifting to, and realizing the full socioeconomic and environmental benefits of, a circular economy is a monumental task facing the United States and the Great Lakes region. And, like elsewhere, no one level of government or sector in the region can close the loop and achieve a future without waste and litter on their own.
Circular Great Lakes provides a forum for pursuing the targeted multi-sector / stakeholder actions required to realize a circular economy in the region, starting with plastics.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Council of the Great Lakes Region Foundation plays an essential role in advancing sustainable economic growth in the region.
1. We convene key sectors -- industry, government, academia, and nonprofits -- to solve for sustainability at our annual, bi-national forum.
2. We engage representatives from all sectors in conversations about the urgent issues around sustainable economic growth in the region -- at the annual Forum, in webinars, and through CGLR Foundation's multiple initiatives.
3. We act as an incubator for pilot projects and demonstration projects, agreed upon and supported by the community we engage, to solve for sustainability and advance innovative industries and technologies.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The CGLR Foundation brings the Great Lakes region's key actors and sectors together as one, so that we can solve for sustainability together, and create the world's first bi-national, sustainable region.

- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
