Resuing Those Truly In Need

Salt Lake City, UT   |  www.whiskersutah.org

Mission

Our goal is to minimize the euthanasia of high-risk pets in Utah. Three actions we focus on to help us achieve this goal are as follows. 1-Rescuing high risk pets from Utah shelter partners. We cater to seniors, medical cases and special needs animals. 2-Keeping pets in homes by providing education, resources and promoting spay & neuter programs. 3-Providing veterinarian care to animals initially not considered “highly” adoptable and bringing them back to health for adoption.

Notes from the nonprofit

As of 2021 we have not been required to file a 990 due to donations/non-profit funding under $50,000. We have a Statement of Functional Expenses that is filled annually by our CPA.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Our goal is to minimize the euthanasia of high-risk pets in Utah. We continue to make this possible by rescuing those most at hisk in Utah shelters due to age, medical need or special needs. We take those that are often over looked due to these above mentioned conditions, bring them back to health by providing much needed vetrinary care, healing body & spirit. We provide them a chance to recover in foster homes, to be loved and learn to trust that there are those who will care for them they way they deserve to be cared for. Our program strives to make these often unaffordable medical needs achievable so that these pets can have a fresh start in a new home without a major medical expense for the new adoptor.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We have defined three actions that our organization focuses on to achieve our goal.
Reducing the number of unwanted pets through spay and neuter programs.
Keeping pets in homes by providing education and resources.
Rescuing and adopting out pets from shelter partners.

Community outreach for spay and neuter, including social media and local event outreach participation.
Medical expenses support, behavioral training and techniques, low-income pet food pantry and supplies.
Successful partnerships with local shelters have allowed for the rescue of at-risk animals to prevent euthanasia due to space needs in the shelter.

Whiskers volunteers spend a great deal of time sharing knowledge of greater quality of care for our feline senior friends, how to elevate the care of our feline friends and how to overcome many common problems that can prevent animals from ending up abandoned or surrendered to our shelters.

Whiskers board of directors is comprised of individuals experienced in animal rescue, fundraising, business operations and have established reputations in the local animal community. We have built a small group of amazingly dedicated volunteers and fosters. We are always looking for more! We truly are a group of individuals who see a need to help those felines who are often over looked in our shelters due to age and medical need. We feel strongly about second chances, about giving dignity and respect to those aging animals and making sure they have they best chance at quality of care and life. We are dedicated to each animal through adoption or end of life. If you feel the same way, please reach out and see how you can get involved!

UPDATE: It was a rough 2020, donations were down, animals and people struggled through the pandemic-shelters were closed or had limited intake and adoption events were postponed but somehow our tiny but mighty group has perservered. We helped animals who had no options, we worked hard in the trenches with the community. We gave our heart and soul to 2020 and still managed to rescue 110 animals, our intake almost matched our adoptions but we still have approximately 63 cats in our program as of March 2021. Things are looking up. We had about half of the donations we did in 2019 but we had a few large donors who supported us and believed in the work we do who made it possible and to them we are forever grateful. We look forward to do even more in 2021 to save lives and grow our reach!

2019 was an amazing year. We finally were reclassified the way we should be as a public charity vs. a private foundation. This was huge for us! We were able to rescue over 200 animals and adopt out over 160 into loving homes. We expanded our foster and volunteer base!

Whiskers has successfully received the support of a local company that has donated in-house marketing support including logo design, materials production, website design and launch planning. Upon the completion of these marketing products, the rescue will host a launch event for our volunteers and donors. Intake of animals is scheduled for June 2018.

Data
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
