What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Educational coverage and quality is inadequate in many parts of Ethiopia. Particularly in rural areas elementary school enrollment is very low and those who are lucky to enroll face enormous challenges. Most middle and high schools are very far for a daily walk and kids from rural areas will be forced to leave their families, find rental place and lead an independent life at an early age. Thus the drop-out rate is alarming. Among those enrolled in elementary school, only 20% complete secondary school and only 5% manage to continue to post-secondary level education. Wonfel AID believes building boarding schools is one approach that will reduce drop-out rate, serve as a model for quality education and create opportunities for thousands. Wonfel (written as “ወንፈል” in Amharic) is a popular Amhara cultural practice with a core principle of giving back and engages the community to accomplishing a challenging task. Wonfel AID believes with community participation we can make an impact.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

1. Build two boarding schools in two years
2. Send one shipment of books in collaboration with Books for Africa

Wonfel AID believes improving the quality of education through various interventions including building boarding schools that will serve as a model for quality education and reduce drop-out rate, ending books in collaboration with Books Africa, support local STEM centers, providing scholarship to secondary school students, engage local role models for mentorship and facilitate tutorial program.

Wonfel AID has engaged interested volunteers of Ethiopian origin who have experienced the challenge first hand. They have local connections with the schools that Wonfel AID planned to work with and some are considered local role models have great potential to mobilize the local community.

1. First shipment of 20,000 books is underway in collaboration with Books for Africa. This shipment has pres elected books in science, engineering and arts for 5 universities and 10 nearby high schools.
2. Raise sufficient funding to provide stipend/scholarship for select students in 10 universities
3. Initiated collaboration agreement with local organizations and government offices to allocate building site for planned two boarding schools.
