The Community Enrichment Project
Enriching communities through youth leadership and action!

What we aim to solve
In 2013, the National Conference on Citizenship (NCOC) released the District of Columbia’s inaugural Civic Health Index. The index illustrated the city’s civic health, which is “a measure of the well–being of a community, state, or nation” based on five factors: service and volunteering, group membership and leadership, connection to information, social connectedness, and political action. According to the report, D.C. residents are “among the least neighborly citizens in the country," however, civic engagement "is highly segmented depending on education and income...” among other factors that plague underserved communities. The Community Enrichment Project aims to address low levels of active community participation through engaging youth programs.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Youth Taking Action
Day-long, six-week, and six-month programs are designed to teach youth about the importance of civic engagement, and how they can be pillars of change in their communities. All programs provide youth with supplementary community volunteer opportunities.
D.C. Youth Action Camp
Youth day-camps with fun, interactive games and activities aimed to accomplish a two-fold approach: to encourage youth to be physically active and to learn about civic engagement.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The mission of The Community Enrichment Project (CEP) is to enhance underserved communities in Washington, D.C. by empowering youth within those communities. We believe that it is imperative to view youth as leaders of today. CEP aims to increase youth civic engagement in underserved communities, with respect to four major pillars: voting, volunteerism, advocacy, and activism. The path to creating stronger communities is dependent upon assessing community needs and building upon the skills and talents that already exist in order to create change from within. Thus, we provide resources to youth to build their skill sets to empower them to become community leaders and active citizens.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategy to ensure our participants master our four identified pillars include providing free youth civic engagement programs in low-income, low socio-economic, and high-risk communities. The various programs teach youth about ways they can advocate for themselves and their communities, how they can organize campaigns for positive change, techniques for public speaking, and related topics. We often partner with other organizations that work and live within our target communities to ensure cross-collaboration with organizations that have similar missions, and so that we maximize opportunities to effectively reach our audience.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Each of our board members and volunteers has experience with developing programs, particularly civic engagement programs; working with youth; fundraising; and collaborating with local, governmental and international organizations. The successes of our completed programs, the positive feedback we receive, and our continued community support is a testament to our capability to achieve our mission and meet our program goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Thus far we have made progress in all areas of our identified organizational goals. We have increased the number of youth program participants, participant and parental satisfaction, and partnerships. In addition to an increase in youth who have participated in our programs, we have notated an increase in youth civic knowledge and action.
