Housing

When a family has a safe home, they can dream about a new future. Zanmi Fondwa is dedicated to creating stability in Fondwa, Haiti through housing, education and economic development. Our goal is to provide jobs for Haitians by building 40 homes in three years. As of February 2021 we have finished 29 homes and created nearly 65 jobs in the rural area of Haiti. Our goal is to finish the 40th home by September 2021. Each home is constructed 100% by Haitians, with 15 - 20 people working on each project. Each job impacts not only the worker, but also the entire community and provides a pathway to a sustainable future.

The average Zanmi Fondwa family moves from a 250 square foot home, with a dirt floor, no bathroom, and dilapidated roof, into a cement block home with concrete floors, three bedrooms, an indoor bathroom, and a hygienic, concrete kitchen. The indoor bathroom with a toilet that flushes and a sink to keep hands clean is more than just a luxury they have never known before; it is a life-saving amenity in the midst of a pandemic.

Zanmi Fondwa homes are well built and well-constructed. The homes have been designed by an engineer native to Fondwa, Fanice Sully. Fanice was the fourth-grade teacher at the St. Antoine School before getting his degree in Engineering. Instead of leaving his community for the capital, he chose to stay and help create infrastructure and improve living conditions. The home construction is under the leadership of three construction superintendents; Ednor Germain. Anglade Guirand, and Reneus Saint Pierre; combined the three bring 100 years of experience of building homes in Haiti. Each has a team of workers he employees from Fondwa. Our homes are built to last for generations.

All families in our program are chosen by our Selection Committee which is comprised entirely of local leaders from Fondwa who meet monthly. Our housing program requires families to:
• Own their land.
• Participate in seminars lead by Fondwa community leaders in subject areas like wellness, financial planning, banking, food and nutrition and environmental care.
• Complete 200 hours of sweat equity in building homes with Zanmi Fondwa.
• Make 36 monthly payments of $1000 gourdes toward the cost of their home. To date, 45% of our homeowners are ahead of their payment schedule.
