What we aim to solve
Emerging singer-songwriters in underserved communities, especially LGBTQ non-binary artists, need help and a safe space/support to create their music. They have talent and desire to create their music,, but don't have access to a professional producer and recording facilities. Recording Artists Development has been working with singer-songwriters since 2003 to arrange, produce and record their music and to give them artistic and career development advice in a workshop setting in which they create a vision for their music, work in the studio with our producer, attend group meetings with other artist to get feedback from music industry professionals. By the end of the workshop they have a professionally arranged, produced, mixed and mastered CD recording of their music that they can use to advance their art and their career. The workshops, industry panel discussions, performance opportunities, individual career consults, helps the individuals and expands American music.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Recording Artists Development, Inc. Recording Workshop/Session
Recording Artists Development, Inc. "RAD" conducts three 8-10 week workshop/recording sessions each year, Fall, Winter-Spring and Summer, open to emerging singer-songwriter/artists in all genres of music, selected by audition and by an open mic singing contest. Each artist works individually in the recording studio with RAD's professional music producer to arrange, produce and record his/ her/their song or songs. Throughout the 8-10 week workshop/session, the artists come together in a group meeting to get feedback and critiquing of their songs by RAD's staff, their fellow artists, and by industry experts RAD brings into the group meetings. RAD creates a safe environment in this workshop/session for the artists to explore and create their music, find their voice, and develop their style. At the end of the workshop, each artist has had a great creative and artistic experience, gained knowledge of recording and interfaced with industry experts and networked with fellow artists, and has an arranged, produced, fully-mixed and mastered CD recording of his/her/their song to further their career and artistic goals. RAD provides artistic and career support and advice to each artist throughout the workshop, and especially in a final consult at the end of the session. The workshop/recording session ends with a Listening Showcase Event held by RAD in which the song(s) are premiered and showcased to an audience. The singer songwriters/artists are selected in all genres of American popular music by auditions and in an open-mic singing-songwriting contest held prior to each session. Free recordings and free studio hours and consults are given out through the open-mic singing songwriting contest and by scholarship interviews.
Recording Artists Development, Inc. Recording EP/CD Workshop/Session
In this 10-12 week workshop, artists will work with RAD's producer, Phil Carroll and the RAD team, to create EP/CD (album)projects. Each artist will work to develop the artistic concept and vision for their project and will work directly in the studio with producer to arrange, produce and record their songs to complete their project. Throughout the workshop they will receive industry feedback on their songs in progress and will at the end have a fully mixed and mastered completed EP/CD project. They will also develop the packaging and marketing concept for their project with the help of RAD staff.

We hold free music industry panel discussions, provide free/low cost consults for artists on career and artistic development, vocal coaching, mixing and mastering of recorded songs.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Recording Artists Development, Inc. is seeking to provide more free and low-cost recording workshops, to provide even greater opportunity for creative and career development for an even greater number of emerging and seasoned singer-songwriter-recording-artists in all genres, to provide more career and creative direction and advice, to help them to learn more about the recording arts, to advance American popular music by providing access and opportunity to create music in all genres to those who might otherwise not have access to a professional music arranger and producer and professional recording facilities. The more opportunity for artists to create freely the better. We wish to continue to provide a safe space for all singer-songwriters to develop and create. We would like to have funds to provide even more free and low-cost recording opportunity for artists, and to do special projects for artists in especially disadvantaged circumstances.
Provide more workshops and opportunities for more artists in underserved communities, especially LGBTQ and non-binary artists, who have not had access to a professional producer and recording facilities to learn about recording and to develop as artists and record their music projects. By providing a professional producer and recording facilities and a structured workshop setting, we are providing opportunity by which artists will develop creatively and have CD recordings to use for their artistic and career advancement. By supporting individual artists and helping them create, we hope to expand American music as a whole. Helping artists in underserved communities, especially LGBTQ, non-binary artists, to have a safe space to create and to make their voices and message heard, will expand the recording arts and music as a whole.
Our goal is to do more for more artists. Any funding will go to conducting the workshops, working directly in the studio with each artist, providing panel discussions with music industry experts, individual career development consults, performance and showcase opportunities for the artists' recorded music. Funding is needed to rent studio space, provide up-to-date recording equipment, connecting on social media and providing opportunities for the artists to perform their music as well as to record.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We continue to consistently provide recording workshops and have added programs to our offerings for more advanced artists, for emerging music producers. We have continued as a Board to provide donations and to volunteer time and resources to make our workshops, open mics, panel discussions happen, and to provide free and low-cost opportunity for emerging singer-songwriter-recording-artists. We are making every effort to reach more artists and to provide them with more offerings in the recording arts. We have developed a new website and are coordinating our social media sites in a way we hope will reach more artists and raise awareness of RAD's non-profit mission. We have brought in more industry experts to give feedback and support to the singer-songwriters in our workshops as they work on recording their songs. We do panel discussions with industry experts, which we open to artists working with RAD and to other singer-songwriters and the public, in order to provide expert music industry advice to these emerging artists and to give the emerging artists an opportunity to network with music industry experts. We have been researching grant opportunities to help RAD expand its ability to work with more artists.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have experience working with singer-songwriters since 2003 to provide workshops three times a year as well as panel discussions, showcase and performing opportunities, individual consult with artists to provide them with career and artistic development. We have a very devoted board and volunteers who donate money and time. Our producer donates many hours working individually with the artists and in group meetings. We have reached out to other music industry experts to contribute their talent and advice. We have created a new updated website, Facebook and Twitter and Instagram accounts in which we promote the artists work and the organization's non-profit work. We have paid through Board Member donations for help in creating the new website and social media help. We put out a newsletter regularly. We are making efforts to raise awareness of Recording Artists Development, Inc. and its non-profit work.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have met our mission since 2003 to provide low-cost, radio-ready demo recordings to artists who would not otherwise have access by providing three workshops a year, adding new workshops, panel discussions, individual consults, performance and showcase opportunities, promoting the artists in our social media and website, etc. We have served over 200 artists and created over 550 songs in all genres and worked with emerging singer-songwriters in all genres, from all backgrounds and encouraging and promoting them and providing them with a safe space to create and to develop as singers, songwriters, recording artists. We are always expanding efforts to reach a diverse group of artists, especially the LGBTQ non-binary community of artists. We have created over 550 songs, individual songs and bigger projects. We have created a community of singer-songwriters, recording artists, musicians, engineers, producers, and a networking and supportive environment. We have regular showcase listening parties, open mic opportunities, workshops, panel discussions, performance opportunities where our artists, other artists, community people all come together to hear the music and to support the artists. We have found opportunities for our artists and their music to be seen and heard on internet radio shows and at live events. We have met our mission to teach about and promote the recording arts. We hope that by giving access to these artists who would not otherwise have access to a professional music producer, professional music recording facilities, and artistic and career advice and support, we have facilitated the creation of music that would otherwise never have been heard. We have also had artists create music mixing genres and creating new music styles. We have done this with much help from our Board's donation of time, energy, talent, and resources. We feel we have met our mission, but would like to have more funding available to reach more emerging artists to record their original songs, to provide them with career and artistic development advice and assistance, and to allow them the freedom in a safe space to create and think outside the box, and to do special CD recording projects.
