What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic

The Bird Center has operated a clinic for orphaned and injured birds each summer since 2004 and have operated year-round since 2021.  We accept songbirds and do emergency treatment for waterfowl and raptors.  We do intensive care on waterfowl with illness or injury. We transfer most healthy waterfowl to other rehabilitators with more space.  We also do some bird rescues. During the summer, we train and work with 15-20 interns, generally college students with an interest in wildlife and the environment.

Population(s) Served
Adults

We have an educational blue jay that cannot be released back to the wild. She has been trained "to the glove" so that she will be comfortable around an audience that may include school children, scouts, and community groups.  We obtained the necessary state and federal permits in early 2013.

In addition, we publish a quarterly newsletter which includes a segment about advocacy in action where we keep an eye on news, laws, and policies that impact birds and other wildlife and take positions when appropriate. We provide this information as part of our educational work.
