Where diversity matters

aka Benny's Books   |   FORT WORTH, TX   |  www.bennysbooks.org

Mission

Benny's Books is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to cultivating literacy among Latino children and children from low-income families generally. Benny's Books distributes free books to children, teachers, schools and organizations in hopes of promoting cultural and ethnic diversity, facilitating social change, and inspiring youth to pursue higher education.

Notes from the nonprofit

At Benny's Books, we believe in three core values: (1) Transparency, (2) Professionalism, and (3) Excitement. (1) Transparency: There are no CEO's from Benny's Books getting unreasonable salaries nor is there tons of overhead going into the pockets of elites. At Benny's Books, we deliver high-quality literature at a reasonable price. (2) Professionalism: From the artists we work with, board of directors, officers, and the research department; we believe in delivering high-quality products with minimal overhead. Our directors all have post-graduate degrees, and much of the profits go into future programs we have in store. (3) Excitement: We create excitement in the communities. You won't catch us in high rise buildings, having others do the grunt work. You'll see us at the local bookstores, town halls, and in the community creating positive change. Our goal is simple: Shake up the industry and make diversity matter.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The disparity of education between Latinos and non-Latinos is a problem Benny's Books looks to address. Latino students have the highest annual high school dropout rate at 7.1% (higher than any other ethnic group) and “the percentage of Latino adults ages eighteen to twenty-four are no longer enrolled in school and who have not completed high school is more than double that of any other ethnic group measured by the [US] census.” A 2003 study shows that Latinos twenty-five years of age and older find themselves at the bottom of the educational rankings. Only eleven percent of Latinos have a college degree and fifty-seven percent have a high school education. A recent Harvard Civil Rights Project reported that seventy-eight percent of Texas high schools are fifty percent or more “minority.” Further, forty-four percent of schools are “exclusively” attended by nonwhites, meaning that ninety percent or more of students are “minority.”

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The Great Pablo Series

"The Great Pablo P.I." is the first of a major project by Benny’s Books aimed at creating major characters of Hispanic descent in order to create more diversity and cultural awareness in the United States. With each book bought, another can be printed out for free and given to those in need.

Population(s) Served

The untitled inaugural leadership program (Ages 11-12) will have four pillars: (1) Leadership, (2) Creative Writing, (3) Art, and (4) Physical Fitness. These pillars will create a solid foundation for children in their formative years that will have a lasting impact. Further, we look to implement this program by the Summer of 2019 with ten (10) kids in the inaugural class, and the program lasting four days (First day will be in the evening, and the rest will be a 9am-4pm program).

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Stories play a central role in developing formative experiences in the lives of many children. By promoting literature to children at a young age within the private and public sphere encourages the beginning of independent reading. Ideally, the practicality of picturesque books with minority-driven protagonists should not be exclusively for Latino children. All children should be exposed to different cultures in literature as some authors have suggested that children stories offer a way to imagine other worlds and differing “suppositions.” By exposing all children to these imaginary tales, it enables children to get immersed in alternative realities and emerge as slightly different people. By creating these books with diversity and giving them to all children, we are changing the formative years of a child's development for the better.

This is a three-step process. The first step is to create and publish books that promote diversity rather than stereotypical roles such as the hot-blooded sexy characters, macho men, gang-members, drug dealers, or undocumented immigrants. These books will be sold and also given out for free to those in the community. Second, would be to create programs in the community to develop kids in their formative years. Benny's Books is looking to start a leadership program (Ages 11-12) with four main focuses: (1) Leadership, (2) Creative Writing, (3) Art, and (4) Physical Fitness. Last, would be to expand the environment for emerging artists and authors looking to create diversity and have an authentic story to tell. With these three steps, poor education attainment, poverty, and incarceration for Latinos will go down.

By publishing our own books, and cutting out the middle-man, we have full autonomy over the products we deliver to ensure there is no white-washing involved in the process. Lastly, the President of our nonprofit has significant experience with nonprofits and personal involvement in the community to ensure that the message stays afloat, as well as being the author and illustrator of the first major project of Benny's Books. The Great Pablo P.I. is the first major project of Benny's Books aimed at creating major characters of Hispanic descent in order to create more diversity and cultural awareness. For every book sold (traditional format only), another book will be given out for free.

We are continuing all three of our steps by vigorous outreach to companies, other organizations, and those who believe in the cause and donate. Benny's Books has already published two children books on Amazon since May 05, 2018. With this accomplishment, we are putting other book publishing companies on notice that diversity matters. We also had a successful four-day fundraising drive where we were able to get over 700$ to continue our programs. We have also worked diligently on compliance, ensuring our website meets the high standards for a nonprofit, and working with other educators and artists around the DFW area to put together a summer leadership program for kids 11-12.
