Stewards of the Sequoia
Together we can keep our trails open
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management and State Parks lack the funding and ability to maintain trails on our public lands. There is a huge need for non profit volunteer organizations such as Stewards of the Sequoia to help perform this much needed maintenance to reduce environmental impacts.and so that trails on our public lands are open and can be enjoyed by the public. The public lacks the knowledge and ability to be constantly engaged in the many planning processes each year which effect the future of recreation on public lands. There is a need for recreation and stewardship advocacy to ensure recreation interests are represented in during these many public land use planning efforts.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Stewards of the Sequoia have created the Trail Appreciation program to increase the capacity for trail maintenance on public lands including the Sequoia National Forest, surrounding Bureau of Land Management lands and other public lands.
Stewards of the Sequoia have created the Trail Preservation program to engage and advocate during public land use planning for improved recreation opportunities capable of handling the increasing demand of future generations so they can enjoy the great outdoors.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Stewards of the Sequoia have a three point Trail Preservation program.
• Volunteerism
• Advocacy
• Education
1) We roll up our sleeves to volunteer and work to help maintain more trails.
2) We advocate and work with agency staff to increase awareness and partnership for recreation.
3) We educate legislators and the public on the importance of pro recreation legislation and the need to protect recreation opportunity.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Stewards of the Sequoia have been able to maintain 4000 miles of trail since 2004, including clearing more than 10,000 downed trees, brushing hundreds of miles of trail and maintaining over 5200 water bars to reduce trail rutting and erosion.
We have a team of 30 trained certified sawyers which allow us to safely clear those downed trees that are blocking trails
We can draw from our membership of more than one thousand volunteers to perform difficult and remote trail projects
We have 17 years of experience and knowledge in performing trail work to government standards on public lands
We have formally adopted 30 trails on public lands.
We have Memorandums of Understanding, Cost Share Agreements with federal land agencies.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Stewards of the Sequoia have maintained more trails each year.
We continue to be the largest on the ground trail maintenance organization in the Sequoia National Forest since 2004
We perform 80% of all trail maintenance on public lands surrounding the Lake Isabella area.
We have prevented the closure of over 160 miles of trails.
Stewards of the Sequoia will continue our successful Trail Preservation program to maintain more trails and engage in more planning to enhance recreation trails
