Seattle, WA   |  www.rayoscontracancer.org

Mission

Our mission is to create sustainable access to timely, high-quality, and affordable radiation treatment for cancer in limited-resource settings globally. We work by providing education and training for radiotherapy clinicians in low- and middle-income countries to empower the local resources that are in place for patient care.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Low- and middle-income countries face a disproportionate burden of cancer death. Limited radiotherapy-specific resources and infrastructure in these settings has impaired the availability of clinician training and development, which is detrimental for cancer patient outcomes.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Rayos Contra Cancer Training Programs

RCC designs, builds, and conducts training programs that serve hundreds of participants at a time in targeted regions of the globe, including Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and other low- and middle-income country regions worldwide. We typically conduct 4 - 8 programs per year.
* Programs are longitudinal: 16 sessions long on average
* One session per week, each session 1 hour long, conducted on Zoom
* Sessions are mostly didactic lecture slides, some case-based demonstrations
* Sessions are scheduled to avoid clinic conflicts and to be time-zone friendly
* Programs also have asynchronous elements
* Participants are working radiotherapy clinicians in LMICs
* No cost

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Rayos Contra Cancer (RCC) aims to close knowledge gaps in cancer care by providing high-quality and accessible education and training for radiation oncology clinicians in low- and middle-income countries and limited resource settings worldwide. Through this, we empower local clinics to provide high-quality, timely, and affordable radiotherapy treatment for cancer patients.

RCC works with existing radiotherapy clinics in limited-resource settings to empower local clinicians. RCC creates and organizes free, easy-to-access training opportunities that provide clinicians with the concepts and skills they need to ensure optimal patient outcomes. We prioritize scalable methods for transferring knowledge to a large number of participants with similar needs in diverse regions globally. We value meaningful learning, learning community, and relationships in our programs.

We strive to maintain positive, productive engagement and learning through all our programs, working closely with both volunteers and participating clinicians.
- Our programs are developed in partnership with and based on the input of local clinicians. We have a network of thousands of participants who help provide insights that allow us to iteratively improve our processes. We also establish connections with local and regional healthcare leaders to strengthen radiotherapy in different regions.
- Our training programs are made possible through the support of expert volunteers, who generously share expertise from their many years of practicing radiotherapy. Our network of volunteers includes hundreds of professionals, mostly based in the United States, but also extending to other countries globally.

As of the end of 2023, we have completed 24 longitudinal training programs (each one approximately 17 weeks long), trained over 4,500 clinicians, engaged over 210 expert volunteers, and benefited the lives of over 900,000 cancer patients (estimated based on the number of patients treated by participants using the technique that was taught).
