What we aim to solve
Food access is determined by a variety of factors. The income of people experiencing hunger, the racial or cultural background of certain populations, and the distance between people and food markets. Consumer choices about food spending and diet are likely to be influenced by the accessibility and affordability of food retailers—travel time to shopping, availability of healthy foods, and food prices. Some people and places, especially those with low income, may face greater barriers in accessing healthy and affordable food retailers, which may negatively affect diet and food security.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Greenleaf Foundation strives to create easier accessibility to healthy food options through the development of agrihoods throughout our community. An agrihood is an organized community that integrates agriculture into a residential neighborhood. The purpose of these communities is to facilitate food production while at the same time providing recreation for members of the community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Greenleaf Foundation's strategy for making this happen is through developing Greenleaf Community Farms. Our farm program develops and maintains agrihoods within multi-family residential properties. Our farm manager develops a strategic farm plan that seeks to grow and distribute free, healthy produce to our communities. Programs such as our Resident Liaison and Volunteer Night work to educate and connect our community around sustainable agriculture.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Through the development of a farm team and community engagement opportunities we are able to plan and develop new projects consistently.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our farm program has been incredibly successful in a short period of time. We began tracking our metrics in January 2019 and we are currently making excellent headway in surpassing our goals. In 2019 we planted, harvested and distributed over 4,000 pounds of food to our local residents. In 2020 we were able to push that to over 6,800 pounds of food. Going into 2021, we have expanded our footprint from the 1st acre to involve 4 sites with over 5 acres of healhly food grown in food deserts across Atlanta.
