Para Rowing Foundation Inc
Creating opportunity for individuals with disability to be the best they can be through rowing
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
There is a gap in opportunity that few para athletes can bridge. Equitable opportunities do not exist for para rowers in pursuit of competition. Imagine wondering: Are ramps or an elevator available to get to my hotel room or boathouse? Are there bathrooms that are accessible to me? Will coaches understand my physical needs? Can I afford this? 1 out of 5 Americans have a documented disability. At the 2019 US National Para Rowing Team Trials 4 of 7 Paralympic qualifying races had one uncontested rower. Internationally, even more uncontested Paralympic qualifying races take place.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Intensive Training Camps
PRF is the world’s only independent, international, non-profit organization meeting the unique needs of para rowers, providing financial, logistical and social-emotional support so they may focus on their development as a rower. Through training camps, athletes are able to work with our specially recruited and trained coaches on their techniques, physical development and use of customized equipment. By the summer of 2018, PRF had already offered its second successful, fully donor-supported camp. At the March 2019 training, para rowers explored on-the-water rowing techniques, equipment options and off-the-water skills in support of their rowing goals. Thirty-one thousand kilometers of flat water and sunshine made for great conditions, as the athletes took to the water in customized equipment that best enhanced each para rower’s abilities. Awe-inspiring is the only phrase to describe the time spent working with these athletes.
First-year milestone included a five-day training for US and Nigerian para rowers in Europe, new para rowing equipment developed with Resolute Adaptive and Universal Vests, financial support for the Ugandan Para Rowing Team and the first-ever para training camp at the prestigious Craftsbury, VT Rowing Center.
Training camps concentrate resources, such as individualized para athlete intakes developed by a critical care nurse which informs para experienced coaching, customizing of equipment and the development of training plans, to meet the complex needs of para athletes. For its camps, PRF arranges para-mindful accommodations, airport transfers, and rowing equipment.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our sole mission is to facilitate a path to competition for athletes with disabilities from any nation. Para Rowing Foundation creates opportunity by removing barriers to participation for para rowers in this high powered, competitive, international sport.
Para rowing is an Olympic and internationally medaled sport that requires a clear pathway to competition. Para athletes require specific resources to level the playing field so more can compete. Creating para-athletic opportunities and removing barriers to participation will address the current inequities in training.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We aim to create opportunity:
We have held training camps designed for athletes with disabilities which have disability informed intakes with an RN, PT, Massage Therapist, Sports Psychologist, and accessibility to properly fitted equipment
We also provide Para Coach training
We aim to remove barriers, we do this by increasing access to our camps. We use vetted accommodations and transportation during our camps. We also provide Paralympic Level Coaching during these events. We provide access to appropriate para rowing equipment with an on-site fabrications engineer to assist with fit or proper use in real time.
We also remove financial barriers by providing outright grants to attend training camps.
We also recently provided funds to use for virtual racing. Sixty-four para rowers from seven nations participated in Para Rowing Foundation's virtual rowing challenge when registration fees were pre-paid.
