What we aim to solve
Many small businesses and developers located in low-income and under-served communities lack the access to the capital and resources necessary to successfully grow. These businesses and organizations often fail to meet the underwriting requirements of banks and conventional lenders, which limits their ability to grow and/or causes the business owners to obtain high-cost and sometimes predatory funding. Without the proper funding, businesses cannot expand and mission-based developers cannot get their projects built. As a consequence, the cycle of unemployment, poverty and blight continues to persist in these communities. Catalyst's mission is to address the following issues within low- and moderate-income communities: -Limited access to capital for minority and women-owned small businesses and mission-based developers -Lack of resources available, including networking opportunities and education, to businesses owned by low- and moderate-income individuals

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Catalyst’s goal is to promote community and economic development that strengthens the social and economic fabric of low-income and underserved communities by providing capital and technical assistance to small business owners, mission-aligned developers, and other organizations focused on community and economic development. We accomplish this by creating innovative loan solutions to foster economic development, job creation and the availability of quality housing that's affordable.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Catalyst provides SBA 504 loans, small business and microenterprise loans, working capital, term loans, and bridge loans to ensure its borrowers have the resources needed to grow their businesses or further their mission. Our loans support job creation/retention and increased wages for residents, expand the availability of affordable housing, and create much needed community facilities to serve low-income households.
In addition to providing capital, Catalyst also offers technical assistance, business coaching, and board support (for nonprofits), which we believe is essential to the success of our borrowers. Our training program is delivered through multiple channels, including in-person meetings, group seminars (via video conference), webinars, and written materials, and covers topics including accounting, legal, marketing, credit building, and access to capital.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
By networking and collaborating with community development organizations, banks and credit unions, local government agencies and elected officials, and other stakeholders, we create customized and flexible lending programs and provide training and technical assistance to small businesses owners that don't have access to capital or the resources necessary to thrive.
