Mission

AutismHelpNow advocates for the most vulnerable children in our communities and their families. Severely developmentally and behaviorally affected youth. The children without voices. We work to connect resources with families and hospitals to provide -and at times create, the most desperately needed programs for this population. At Present, our top priority is building an In Patient Neurobehavioral Unit ( NBU) in the Seattle Area. This is not a residential treatment center. A Neurobehavioral Unit is a program that operates within an established hospital. An NBU will provide intensive behavioral interventions that combine cognitive therapy, ABA techniques and pharmaceutical interventions. A Behavioral ICU of sorts.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Autismhelpnow works to address the dire need for inpatient, intensive behavioral services for developmentally delayed youth. At present, there are 16 beds available within the United States to serve this desperate population. The wait for such a bed can be well over 3 years. The children waiting for these beds suffer from severe self harm, violence and aggressiveness. The lives of their caregivers, families and selves are often put at risk. Although short term acute mental care units are available nation wide, intensive Neurobehavioral units are limited to just one sixteen bed unit. We work with local hospitals and organizations to bring awareness to both the issue at hand, and the proven success rates of such programs. We work directly with the hospital staff and administration to bring these programs to life. Our biggest challenge at this time is funding. To open a pilot version of this program it will take at least two million dollars to get off the ground.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Seattle Children's Hospital Neurobehavioral Unit

At Present, our top priority is building an In Patient Neurobehavioral Unit ( NBU) in the Seattle Area. This is not a residential treatment center. A Neurobehavioral Unit is a program that operates within an established hospital.
An NBU will provide intensive behavioral interventions that combines cognitive therapy, ABA techniques and pharmaceutical interventions. Nutrition, physical therapy and other medical issues can be addressed on the unit as they arise during the patient’s stay.
Behavioral tendencies such as self harm, violence, running away and other life threatening behavioral issues will be of primary focus.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We aim to develop a model in patient Biobehavioral unit that will run smoothly and be easily replicated in hospitals across America. From there, we will work with hospitals outside of Washington State to develop more such programs where there is interest.

Awareness of the crisis at hand, the lack of beds available and the indisputable success of those children that have been fortunate enough to attend such a program.

We are well known at Seattle Children's Hospital and trust has been established that we are working in the best interest of the hospital and the population it serves. With a strong and lengthy background in marketing and business start ups, the Autismhelpnow team understands the delicate intricacies involved in launching a multi team project such as this. As the parent of a child with Autism, Developmental delay and severe behavioral issues, whose child was fortunate enough to attend an in patient Neurobehavioral Unit which resulted in tremendous success for the child and family, there is a first hand knowledge of both the challenges faced by those waiting for a bed, and the success such an opportunity brings.

So far, Autismhelpnow has succeeded in raising tremendous awareness of our campaign. Through our website and social media work, we have people reaching out to us from not only Washington state where our work is focussed at present, but all through out the united states and Canada.

We have been able to speak with Rashi Gupta a Senior Policy Advisor to Governor Jay Inslee and are working to stir further support on a legislative level for this project.

In addition to the above, we are also being reviewed by Premera Blue Cross, One of the largest Medical Insurance Organizations in our area as a possible sponsorship opportunity as they have followed our story and see opportunity in this ground breaking project.

Furthermore, there is now a team within Children's Hospital tasked with the planning of this event. Lead staff and a location for the Neurobehavioral Unit has been established.
