What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

I AM a Golfer Foundation’s mission is to serve the South Dallas community. The Southern Dallas community is primarily African American and Hispanic American. The social and relational skills of golf as a lifelong sport are well recognized. The introduction of golf to this demographic can have life-changing implications when the participants develop skills that make the game enjoyable enough to carry their interest in golf into adulthood. The challenge in the community that we serve is that learned and developed golf skills as a youth are often beyond the family’s economic means. Our commitment to providing affordable quality golf instruction, jobs, and scholarships requires a significant if not total financial subsidy for young people interested in golf. Golf teaches a variety of life skills and character development traits that I AM a Golfer Foundation to instill within the underserved youth in the South Dallas community.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

I AM a Golfer Foundation designed three pillars to breakdown and target three specific areas to impact the underserved youth in the Southern Dallas community through golf and golf-related programs. The pillars are meant to provide structure, mentorships, and guidance through the character development characteristics in golf, while becoming life long golfers. Each pillar will enable the I AM a Golfer Foundation to breakdown the 63.3 percent of students in the local DISD community that are at risk youth and provide them with ways to envision a brighter future that enables them to improve life outcomes, work hard, life skills, business skills, and continued education.

I AM a Golfer Pillar provides affordable quality instruction and playing opportunities for area junior golfers. This is met through our programming for beginners to advanced players, proven instruction concepts and methods, funding for tournament fees, personal mentoring of life skills, and character development.

I AM an Intern Pillar provides employment opportunities and jobs at Cedar Crest Golf Course for area high school and college students. Our college internships include all areas of the business operation including, general business skills, and leadership skills. Our high school interns will gain experience during the summer at Cedar Crest Golf Course within the golf operation and on the course.

I AM a Scholar Pillar provides scholarships for South Dallas DISD high school graduates who play golf. These are one – year scholarships awarded in amounts of $1,000-$5,000 annually. The eligibility pre-requisite consists of being an eligible member of the I AM a Golfer Foundation or participation in the NTPGA Fairways to Success Program.

Our goals to create life-changing opportunities for the South Dallas youth through golf and golf-related programs at Cedar Crest Golf Course can become a reality through a shared commitment to the community and youth. Our mission to be a catalyst for community renewal and transformation can only become a reality through partnerships with organizations and individuals that resonates with our mission and understands that the youth we mentor today is our future tomorrow. Through these shared core beliefs we can create communities that are grounded in stewardship, youth, and community preservation.
