Techqueria is a 501c3 nonprofit that serves the largest community of Latinx in Tech in the US
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Between 70 and 85 percent of jobs are found through networking. That may come naturally for people who are from a family of professionals or who went to prestigious colleges. By the time they enter the workforce, some young adults already have large networks and lots of social capital that can help them find jobs, even with limited work experience. But young Latinx adults often face a social capital gap. Without access to the same networks and connections, it can be much harder to find a full-time job, even with the necessary education and skills. As a result, many young adults end up underemployed, working in jobs they are overqualified for and/or working fewer hours a week than they need to. And research shows that being underemployed can have lasting effects. As the largest community of Latinx in Tech in the US, we can help close the social capital cap in tech, thereby helping to close the overall racial equity gap with the goal of helping our members become tech industry leaders.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our mission is to provide Latinx professionals with the resources and support that they need to thrive and become leaders in the tech industry.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We work with both tech companies and employee resource groups (ERGs) to build Latinx-centered spaces that revolve around career advice, technical talks, mentorship, open jobs, networking events, speaking opportunities, and open-source in order to comprehensively affect change in the tech industry.
Coming from all walks of life, we believe that the diversity of our community is the most reliable asset we have. Our space aims to be inclusive so we invite Latinx from the regions of the Caribbean, Haiti, and Brazil as well as those who identify as Afro-Latinx, Asian-Latinx, or LGBTQIA. The term Latinx is used instead of Latino or Latina because it is a gender-neutral and inclusive term.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have hired 2 employees after incorporating as a 501c3 nonprofit in March 2019 and have roughly 30 volunteer leads helping us with our mission.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We've grown organically to a community of nearly 10,000 Latinx professionals in the tech industry. We have 7 active chapters across the US and over 50% of our new members hear about Techqueria through word of mouth. We have grown our corporate partnerships, number of events and number of chapters by more than double over the last year. We have matured our internal processes in order to stay legally and financially compliant.
