Melanated Pearl Corporation

Bringing that Black Light to things that aren’t quite right

aka Melanated Pearl Corporation   |   Hampton, GA   |  https://www.melanatedpearl.org/

Mission

Our mission is to empower, educate and uplift women; Black Women in particular.

Notes from the nonprofit

Melanated Pearl aims to improve the critical services provided to homeless individuals and families in Clayton County, Georgia. To achieve this goal, the organization will consolidate existing initiatives and restructure its services under a rapid re-housing strategy, which focuses on providing short-term rental assistance, case management, and support services to help individuals and families move out of homelessness and into stable housing. Rapid re-housing has gained momentum nationally and within Georgia, but organizations are not widely implementing the strategy outside metro Atlanta, GA. Research shows that rapid re-housing can offer individuals and families immediate access to permanent housing, which is more cost-effective than other strategies and can improve outcomes for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. To execute the new strategy, the Board should approve the restructuring of services under a Rapid Re-housing program and allocate the necessary resources.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Melanated PEARL Corporation is seeking funding to pay rent for residents who have lost income because of layoffs. There is this assumption that the conversation about Black women and girls is happening at a nonprofit somewhere, in some community, or at some other organization. It turns out, that just hasn’t happen and or isn't happening enough. Black Women in Clayton County are the largest group living in poverty. Many of the circumstances that we’ve come to accept as justifying an exclusive focus on men and boys are in fact directly related to the social-economic challenges facing their mothers and those, in turn , are directly related to some of the challenges facing girls. Black mothers are the working poor in our community. We tend to ignore them because they are not homeless yet. Due to income requirements many working mothers do not qualify for financial assistance programs in place. At a result, many families are unable to transition to stable housing due to economic hardship.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Melanated Pearl Corporation plays a vital role in building a healthy community by providing critical services that contribute to economic stability and mobility of women. Our organization offers targeted services for Black Women in the Metro Atlanta area.
Economic Stability because economic stability is the foundation for economic mobility. Without it, Black women and their children have little chance of moving out of poverty.

The COVID19 pandemic continues to disproportionately harmed Black and Latinx populations by widening racial inequities and creating unprecedented economic hardships. Black and Latinx people faced higher levels of eviction and housing instability before the crisis, and all signs point to greater risk of eviction during pandemic.
