Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our mission is to arm people with the resources to end air pollution in Mongolia\nOur vision is clean, sustainable and prosperous Mongolia\nWhat We Do\n\nWhy\nThe right to breathe clean air is a fundamental human right. We deserve to live long and healthy lives with our loved ones in our homeland.\n\nOur Alignment to Sustainable Development Goals\nOur work contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) put forth by the United Nations. Specifically, we align with and seek to impact the following 7 SDGs and their targets:\n\nBreathe Mongolia’s work supports 3 out of the 10 goals set forth by Mongolia Sustainable Development Vision 2030, which includes:\n\n#6\nImprove the living environment of the Mongolian people to lead a healthy and long life; increase life expectancy at birth to 78 years\n\n#8\nPreserve ecological balance and to be placed among first 30 countries on the rankings of the countries by the Green economy index in the world\n\n#10\nBuild professional, stable and participative governance, free of corruption that is adept at implementing development policies at all levels.

We create bilingual digital space and set of tools to address the lack of a centralized source for quality information and insight to the current conditions in Mongolia by focusing on: \nEducation\nWe educate the public so they can protect themselves and reduce emissions\nCommunity\nWe build a community of professionals and allies working to reduce air pollution\nWatchdog\nWe monitor policies and decisions to inform the public and to promote accountability

The Breathe Mongolia - Clean Air Coalition is an international team of professionals and everyday citizens, working to end Mongolia’s air pollution crisis. \nBreathe Mongolia developed an air pollution educational platform in 2019, which we continue to maintain and\nimprove. Our platform provides bilingual access to current information and educational resources on air pollution and health for Mongolian and international audiences. Our team is composed of members and advisors with a broad base of expertise and experience working in leading tech companies, including IBM, OmniSci, Google, and Apple.

Breathe Mongolia raises awareness about the health impacts of air pollution, addresses the lack of collaboration and knowledge exchange between stakeholders, and promotes transparency and accountability among policymakers. We believe that universal access to reliable air pollution resources will prompt developmental and behavioral change, bringing equitable access to clean energy and healthcare. A brief timeline of our operational highlights is listed below and also can be found on our About us web page:\n2017: Breathe Mongolia started as a global public awareness demonstration at Times Square, New York City, and was featured on National Geographic’s Your Shot series. Our Facebook live video got 529K views, 19K impressions, and was shared 5,184 times. \n2018: The movement evolved into a digital engagement campaign on social media. We collaborated with world-class artists such as Heesco, a renowned Mongolian-Australian mural artist. We painted a mural in Melbourne, Australia, and raised awareness about Mongolia’s air pollution crisis through ABC news Australia. \nFirst half of 2019: Our team worked with the Mongolian Center for Investigative Reporters to conduct the first independent pollution monitoring project in Ulaanbaatar to identify the reason for a reportedly dramatic decrease in air pollution. Our work was published on DataJournalismAward.org as well as Mongolian media outlets. Breathe Mongolia registered as an official nonprofit organization in Delaware, USA, and obtained a Bronze Seal of Transparency on GuideStar. We collaborated with the National Statistics Committee of Mongolia and translated their comprehensive Air Pollution and Health Concerns in Ulaanbaatar report from Mongolian into English. \nSecond half of 2019: We launched our bilingual website under the “Right to Breathe” project, funded ($7,000) by the US Embassy and the EU in Mongolia in alliance with People in Need (PIN). The site hosts reliable air pollution information, a real-time interactive pollution map, news, policy documents, reports, and research papers. We concluded the year of 2019 by partnering with UNICEF, Mongolia during the Combatting urban air pollution impacts on maternal and child health in Asia: A Science and Policy Dialogue international conference, and curated the “Sky Burial'' exhibition, painted by Heesco. At the conference, we were proud to see the National Statistic Committee report, which we translated, in the hands of international scientists. \nFirst half of 2020: We raised $8,000 with the help of generous donors from 15 countries for Mongolian children as part of a fundraiser that ultimately raised $80,500 for COVID relief efforts. We have been monitoring COVID-19 relief funds for Mongolia and are about to launch a COVID-19 dashboard and timeline of key events and a directory of all air pollution-related stakeholders in Mongolia. \nSecond half of 2020: We visualized air quality improvement zones of Ulaanbaatar to the pollution map so residents can find
