Mission

Our mission is to empower people, businesses, and communities to achieve their fullest potential through inclusive work environments. Cakeable is a nonprofit workforce development program for adults who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We offer vocational training opportunities in our bakery and the Cakeable Cafe (coming 2024!) We envision joyfully inclusive communities where EVERY PERSON has the opportunity to experience their God-given value and express their abilities and purpose!

Cakeable aims to solve the employment gap for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Charlotte. The program's Bakery and Cafe provide vocational training opportunities, teaching specific job skills and soft skills for successful employment. By doing so, Cakeable aims to empower individuals to become self-advocates, inspire and uplift them, help achieve their dreams, and integrate into the community with confidence and purpose.

Bakery Training

The Bakery Training program at Cakeable is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to become successful bakers. The program includes both classroom instruction and hands-on training in a professional bakery setting.

Population(s) Served

Cakeable's Bakery Production program offers students the opportunity to gain real-world experience working in a commercial bakery. Students will learn to produce a wide variety of baked goods, including cakes, pastries, breads, and more.

The Cafe Program at Cakeable is focused on providing students with the skills they need to work in a fast-paced cafe environment. The program includes training in customer service, food preparation, and barista skills, as well as experience working in a real cafe.

Cakeable has accomplished a lot so far. They have secured grants from Mecklenburg County Government, the State Employees Credit Union (SECU), and Coca Cola Consolidated for workforce and organizational development, expanded their bakery operations to the newly refurbished Sweet Spot Studio kitchen, added morning hours for new student employees, and construction on the Cakeable Cafe began in November 2023.

Cakeable has also made significant progress in terms of partnerships and community engagement. They have established wholesale partnerships with Catalyst Coffee Bars at CPCC campuses, participated in numerous community events, markets, and festivals, including the Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am and the Taco Dash SK, showcased their mission, and generated community support.

Looking forward, Cakeable has set ambitious goals for the years 2024-2027 and 2024-2031. They aim to expand and diversify their board, open the Cafe to provide vocational training and preparation to 25-30 adults with IDD, implement employee development activities, formalize and refine vocational training programs, expand their employment opportunities and bakery sales capacity by opening a second location for baking, and formulate and implement a diversified development strategy and marketing plan to further engage the community.

Cakeable also aims to train 1,000 students successfully in vocational programs by 2030, achieve a 60% employment rate for program graduates, establish 100 strong employment partnerships for Cakeable Charlotte graduates, enhance and adapt training programs to remain effective and relevant, expand Cakeable's reach as a recognized leader in inclusive employment and vocational training, foster inclusivity by accommodating individuals with diverse abilities and backgrounds, and ensure financial sustainability through diverse revenue streams and strategic resource management.
