Dallas, TX   |  https://savegiraffesnow.org/

Mission

Our mission is to save giraffes from extinction so they can live freely and safely in the woodlands and savannas of their native Africa. We have over twenty action-oriented projects in nine African countries including creating or improving large giraffe sanctuaries and wildlife corridors, supporting anti-poaching rangers and de-snaring work, rescuing, caring for and rewilding giraffe orphans, rescuing endangered giraffe trapped on an island, and rewilding giraffe and relocating giraffe to broaden gene pools.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Few people are aware giraffes are disappearing and at high risk of extinction due to loss of habitat, bush-meat poaching, and armed conflict. Giraffe numbers in Africa have declined 40%, from an estimated 151,000 in 1985, to about 100,000 by 2015, according to the most recent International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Over the last 300 years giraffe have lost 80% of range across Africa and have already become extinct in 7 African countries. Unless meaningful on-the-ground actions are aggressively taken, wild giraffe in Africa will be all but gone in the next several decades. The time to act is now.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Anti-Poaching

Our anti-poaching efforts are innovative and effective, they include mobile anti-poaching teams in hotspot areas, as well gaining undercover and informant intelligence, and specialized training of investigators and prosecutors.

Examples of our anti-poaching efforts include:
• Rapid Response Ranger Training - Luambe National Park, Zambia
• De-Snaring & Anti-Poaching Teams - Murchison Falls and Kidepo National Parks, Uganda
• Wildlife Anti-Poaching Rangers - Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
• Initiating and supporting multiple mobile anti-poaching squads to combat the terrorist-led poaching gangs of northeastern Kenya.

Population(s) Served

SGN supports community-led conservation projects that ultimately benefit both people and giraffe.

Some examples of this work are:
• Monitoring and protection of the desert giraffe of northern Kenya
• Developing local employment opportunities and investment in the Ruko Community Conservancy, creating tangible local benefits and sustainable co-existence with newly re-introduced giraffe
• Hiring local people and introducing new technologies to reduce giraffe deaths from highway crossings in Kenya
• Population assessment in regions containing previously unstudied and uncounted giraffe – South Africa.

Population(s) Served

Our rewilding, rescue, and reintroduction efforts in numerous countries have returned giraffe to back to areas where they had been extinct for decades.

Additionally, SGN has established rescue centers that rescue giraffe calves that have become orphaned because their mothers have been killed or because of drought. These centers then rehabilitate, care for and return these giraffe safely back to the wild.

Examples of Save Giraffes Now rescue and rewilding projects include:
• Reintroduction of giraffe into a rhino sanctuary in eastern Botswana
• Establishment of a new wild corridor that connects Luambe National Park to Lukusuzi National Park allowing giraffe to naturally return to Lukusuzi in Zambia
• Supporting the reintroduction of critically endangered West African giraffe back into Gadabedji Biosphere Reserve, Niger where they had become extinct
• Creation and support of giraffe orphan calf rescue and rewilding centers in Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Simply put, we want to save giraffe from the silent extinction which is happening right now.

Save Giraffes Now (SGN) invests in effective and innovative conservation projects which stop population decline and create the habitat needed for giraffe to survive and thrive in the woodlands and savannas of their native Africa. We are committed to ensuring that giraffe conservation becomes equal in importance to other iconic African animals, like rhino, lion and elephant.

SGN’s approach to solving the problem is simple; respond rapidly to needs in Africa for giraffe conservation. We listen to the needs or challenges, codevelop conservation strategies with local authorities and communities, then train and hire local people to do the on-the-ground projects. SGN uses our expertise to effectively implement problem-solving projects with a clear focus on saving giraffe NOW. Additionally, our team is also significantly engaged in creating exciting and innovative programs to build awareness for the cause and inspire action for giraffe around the world.
