What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We think more and more teenagers are flying under the radar in high schools, and we believe a highly relational environment with talented teachers is critical to a student's growth and success. We seek to provide this to as many families as possible by keeping tuition as affordable as possible, using need-based tuition assistance funded by donors. We also actively recruit the best teachers who have proven themselves at other schools, attracting them to join our staff and be part of one of the fastest growing Christian high schools in the country.

Tuition Assistance Fund

Approximately 50% of students receive need-based tuition assistance to enable as many as families as possible to afford an outstanding Christian education for their children.

Population(s) Served

As the school rapidly grows, due to the booming economy in south Denver, new teachers need to be hired. This fund provides needed resources to attract the best available teachers, and to ensure we retain the best teachers currently on staff.

Population(s) Served

Enrollment has exploded from 175 in 2011 to 525 in 2017. Expansion of school capacity is needed to accommodate continued growth.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goal is to serve families by providing an outstanding high school education based upon a biblical worldview. Though our school name implies it is full of Lutherans, only 15% of the student body identifies as Lutheran - over 50% identify as non-denominational Christians - and we accept any student who is open to being taught from a biblical worldview. We boldly teach the Bible is the word of God, and we believe we are partnering with parents to effectively communicate to teenagers what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ as they mature into independent adults. We unapologetically recruit nationwide for exceptional teachers who can provide students with an outstanding education in math, science, STEM, English, social studies, business studies, visual arts, performing arts, physical education, foreign languages, and theology. Several after school clubs compete state-wide including Robotics and Cyber Security Coding.

In order to effectively communicate to teenagers what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ, we believe we must do three things well. First, recruit and retain highly talented Christian teachers; we loosely call them Rockstars. Specifically, we seek out the best teachers from other schools (yes, we "poach") who are not just subject matter experts, but also irresistibly interesting to students, highly relational mentors, and positive role models. Second, we created and actively feed the culture of being a highly relational environment. Methods include the typical things like small class sizes, but expand to: before school office hours for all teachers, a teacher-advisor assigned to each 12th grader, and beginning of the year 2-day retreats for freshmen and seniors with their core teachers. Third, we apply biblical principals to nurture, inspire, and educate students. For instance, our discipline approach can be called "tough love" meaning we stress repentance and forgiveness, along with repercussions. We believe teenagers appreciate boundaries that are for their safety and the safety of others, and respond well to them when they are lovingly applied with consistency and proper communication.

This school actually has assembled a teaching staff of Rockstars. Enrollment has tripled in the past seven years, creating the need to hire many more teachers. One of the questions we really ask prospective teacher is, "are you the best teacher at your current school?" And we are serious about that. Maybe we should feel a little bad about taking the best teacher away from their current school, but the bottom line is our school is growing be leaps and bounds, while other Christian schools are declining in enrollment for a variety of reasons. It isn't unusual, or wrong, for highly talented teachers to want to be part of a winning team that's located in a fast-growing area where their personal future impact promises to expand, not contract. We match great teachers with great spaces - classrooms and labs equipped for 21st learning - which is where our fundraising for facility upgrades and expansion comes in. Another key ingredient to the success of this school is having highly capable leadership with bold vision and the skills to execute it. That includes the ability to attract the most talented teachers, to fuel their tanks, and instill a culture of high achievement and accountability. Organizationally, we have a Dean of Women and a Dean of Men, who are the disciplinarians. We purposely fill those positions with highly relational teachers who continue to teach part-time to maintain personal contacts with students in non-disciplinary roles.

Enrollment grew to 595 in the 2018-2019 school year, breaking our 63-year enrollment record. In 2020, it is up go 740, and in 2021 over 800 students are forecasted. Currently we are the fifth largest Lutheran High School in America, and due to the growth in metro Denver we anticipate growing into one of the top three. To accomplish this rapid growth, in a private school, a capital campaign to fund building more classrooms has been underway since 2017, and represents the greatest need for support from donors. Academically our graduation rate has been 100% since 2017. Over twenty percent of our graduates get accepted to Top 100 Nationally-ranked universities, earning impressive amounts of merit scholarships. Approximately one third of graduates choose to attend Christian or Catholic universities. Athletically our teams have won fourteen State championships in the past nine years, including an unprecedented four years in a row in boys' track and field. We also stress a service-learning component at this school. We believe excellent education includes significant hands-on experiences - not just filling students heads - so we dedicate school time for meaningful service projects in our community, we provide weekend and summer opportunities, and we have service hour requirements as a graduation prerequisite.
