Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Solid Waste Management
Our Solid Waste Programs are designed to reduce illegal dumping, encourage recycling, and enhance education of the above goals.
Protecting Wolf Creek from Development
Wolf Creek is a an area known to be important wildlife corridor for Canadian Lynx at 10,500 ft. A large resort development, called "Village at Wolf Creek" was slated for build-out. SLVEC mobilized citizens and monitored the decision from the USFS that would analyze the true costs and impacts of the proposed development. SLVEC recently took the FS to court to challenge their assessment, and the judge sided with us, making the project a success. This is an example of our land advocacy projects.
Rio Grande National Forest Management Recommendations
The Rio Grande National Forest, which encompasses 1.8 million acres, surrounds us by including most of the eastern slope San Juans and western Sangre de Cristo mountains. The Forest Service is now going through a management plan revision to determine how the forest will be managed over the next 20 years. SLVEC and partners are providing a management plan alternative that embraces landscape level protection that includes wildlife corridors, wetlands and watershed protections, Special Interest Areas, Research Natural Areas, recommended Wilderness, as well as climate change adaptation.
Combating Oil and Gas Development
SLVEC continues its work as an advocate for public involvement in decisions that could negatively affect local communities, pure aquifers, and wildlife as a result of oil and gas exploration in the San Luis Valley. We work with federal and state agencies as well as county and municipal governments to ensure that our agricultural and rural lifestyle is not sacrificed to provide short-term financial gain from the drilling, fracking, and extraction of oil and gas.
Renewable Energy
A Renewable Energy Master Plan for the Valley can help meet our energy needs for the next century while protecting the wildlands and rural agricultural values that bring a sustainable economy. SLVEC will work to ensure that a renewable distributed Energy Plan will be considered that protects the Valley aquifer, wetlands, diversity of species and rich cultural heritage. SLVEC will work with energy providers, public lands managers, local governments, business and non-profits to guide appropriately scaled and sited alternative energy development. This will include preparing analysis and recommendations to guide the federal BLM's planning for solar facilities siting.
