Mission

Trust for Natural Legacies, Inc.
is a non-profit land trust that preserves and restores natural areas by
owning, operating and promoting nature preserves throughout the
Midwest. We are committed to offering ecologically sensitive programs
on our nature preserves that provide public opportunities for
recreation, education, scientific research and limited natural burial.
These programs are critical to our mission, because they result in
related environmental benefits to the community and generate long-term,
multi-generational public attachment to and involvement in the nature
preserves. By fostering strong, long-term family and community
attachments to the nature preserves, these programs ensure that our
preserves are socially, legally, spiritually and
financially-sustainable.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Education

Areas conserved by TNL are cemetery nature preserves. These preserves are places where people of all ages can learn about the natural environment just as they would at any other nature preserve.  Additionally, volunteers at TNL are frequently hosting workshops and presentations to inform our communities about the unique benefits of natural burial and conservation cemeteries.

Population(s) Served

TNL's conservation cemeteries are areas where community members can enjoy hiking trails, wildlife, restored natural landscapes, and much more.

Population(s) Served

Green cemeteries are a focal program area of Trust for
Natural Legacies. Green burial, or natural burial, avoids
non-biodegradable materials like metal caskets and concrete, and toxic
embalming substances. This allows for natural decomposition, which
respects the ecological cycles of life and death. Cemetery nature
preserves
(or conservation cemeteries) can also protect thousands of acres of important natural areas.
