What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
In our short history, we found that Acadiana needed a consistent effort toward making our land as vibrant as our people are. People come from all over the world to Lafayette, and the first thing they comment on is our culture. We’re infectious, we’re inventive.
We're the sort of culture that takes a crawfish, a bug who lives in mud huts around Acadiana and boils them for dinner. We create our own styles of music; we formed our own language. We're a gumbo of lifestyles who know how to pass a good time.
Though we know how to work hard here in Acadiana, we also play hard. It's through that play that at times, our citizens forget to pick up after themselves during our festivals or Mardi Gras - causing litter and neglect issues in our wonderful parish.
A local Philanthropist, Matthew Stuller, formed Parish Proud to rekindle civic pride within the Acadiana region. Matt, a seasoned Eagle Scout, sees the world through the lens of Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouts by trying to "leave this world a little better than you found it."
Other efforts attempted change in the past, and the argument could be made these organizations made some headway – but because of either oversight, resources, lack of full-time staffing, or burnout – these efforts eventually faded and left Lafayette stranded once more.
Parish Proud is here to stay. With dedicated staff and the flexibility that comes with a 501©3 – we stand now with the best chance to see Lafayette Parish become a Lafayette its citizens deserve.
Since its inception, we have worked with over 2,000 volunteers to pick up over 100,000 pounds of litter and dumping from our streets knowing that each item picked up makes it that much less likely for another citizen to litter after. We know this helps with drainage in our area, helping to mitigate floods caused by a littered storm drains or waterways.
