What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in 5 school age children in the United States are obese. This has become an epidemic of extreme proportion that is affecting the wellness of our next generation and needs to be addressed immediately! We cannot do this with prescriptions, home remedies, or legal restrictions on portion size. They have all been tried and failed. Our approach will be very different.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Obesity Prevention

Helping Parents by: -Informing parents so they can better understand the causes, dangers, and consequences of obesity in children. -Supporting parents of overweight and obese children in their efforts to lead them on a path to a healthier future. -Supply informative articles to help them influence and teach their children about nutritious eating. -Giving access to a database of healthy, “kid-friendly” recipes. -Offering ideas, resources, and guidance to help change their child’s eating and exercise habits. Teaching Children: We all know how hard it can be to steer a child down a path they have no interest in, so we are approaching this in a way children can relate to. Some of these approaches are: -Classic Arcade style video games with a healthy twist, such as race-cars fueled by healthy food choices and a traditional platformer in which “Kenny the Koala” has to avoid junk foods to make it to the next level. -Animated exercise routines for younger children given by “Kenny the Koala” himself! -Helping children understand the value of making good food choices in a way they can understand and relate to. -Yoga and exercise videos that are fun and enjoyable. -And many more ways directed at involving children at an early age to be aware of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Five powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?

Our mission is a simple one, and that is to decrease obesity among children and young adults across America. We will reach as many children, young adults and their parents as possible to promote the benefits of weight loss and proper weight maintenance.

To accomplish this we have formed a non-profit organization, Obesity Prevention Foundation of America Inc., and have started developing a new and innovative website to help combat this epidemic. STRATEGY FOR CHILDREN There will be a section where the child, adolescent, or parent, can create their own animated character or avatar, that they will be able to interact with. They will then select a weekly diet and exercise program for their creation. With these selections completed, they can look into the future to see how their selections have affected their character’s health at a later time-period. The best part and most important is, they can go back as many times as they want to change the character’s meals and exercise program in order to improve results. Create games that lead children to a healthy conclusion. For example, we will create a race-car game. In this game, the cars will use food as fuel. Articles that are written by teens, discussing their feelings and experiences about obesity. Videos showing age appropriate exercise programs. STRATEGY FOR THE PARENTS We will have a large selection of articles on different subjects written by health professionals for the parents. Some of the topics are… How to work with and motivate a child to want to eat healthy. Teach and explain the importance of using the Body Mass Index. Appealing and healthy recipes as alternatives. Age appropriate exercise programs to do with children. How being overweight affects a child’s academics. How being overweight can cause other medical problems.

As we are a newly started Non-profit our founder has donated the necessary funds to do the following: Hired five freelance writers In various fields of nutrition and health to write informative and engaging articles about children’s health, exercise, the physical, emotional and psychological effects of obesity, and healthy/tasty recipes. Hired several freelance programmers to create and optimize our website for seamless user interface, age-appropriate BMI calculator and charts. Video games based on healthy food selection (e.g. race-car fueled by fruits & vegetables) Age-appropriate animated exercise videos.

We will be able to gauge our progress by analyzing our website traffic for engagement. We'll be tracking participation in our Newsletter, BMI calculator use, Articles of Interest page, and healthy recipes section, as well as the children's participation in our various health conscious activities directed at their age group.

As an organization we have received: -Google Ad Grant Fund -PayPal Giving Fund status -YouTube for Non Profits -eBay Giving Fund -Techsoup membership Our website is up and running and receiving a steady flow of traffic. Our GoFundMe campaign has recently been promoted on a grander scale and we expect to see greater returns shortly. Our social media presence has been growing and gaining more followers which has in turn directed more traffic to our website. We still have many of our innovative approaches being developed and once they are finished, expect an exponential growth in web traffic. Our future goals are to have multiple health oriented video games including alien invasions by junk-food and even growing your own farm fresh crops. We will have a series of animated videos with our spokesperson, Kenny the Koala, teaching age-appropriate exercises as well. One of our key goals is to create an interactive Avatar program
