What we aim to solve
Shelter Animal Count is an organization that gathers statistics from nationwide shelters and rescue organizations that turn in their numbers. According to the Shelter Animals Count, approximately 2,873 shelters and rescue organizations participate and have populated the following statistics giving us the best scenario of pet surrendering, abandonment and overpopulation in general. With these numbers LaHR has complied statistics for Siberian huskies that are involved below. The American Kennel Club states that in 2018 the Siberian Husky is the 14th most popular dog out of 192 breeds classified in America. Husky numbers represent 7.29 percent of the breeds surveyed. 810 huskies were euthanized in Louisiana in 2018. This leaves a great need for Louisiana Husky Rescue’s presence. Note that 38% of registered agencies did not report in 2018. The number could be doubled but no assumptions will be made.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Volunteer Program
Our volunteers are a crucial part of the organization. LaHR has a volunteer program that keeps the organization going. Volunteers do everything from events, coordinating adoptions, helping with fundraisers, doing administrative duties and even walking and bathing our rescued huskies. A healthy volunteer program that provides not only the huskies continued social interaction but puts a new purpose in an individual’s life. Volunteers learn important skills, undertake new challenges, and travel to different areas of the state and sometimes other states. Volunteers become a part of a community that understands the importance of rescuing and helping abandoned huskies. Most importantly they learn all about the Siberian husky breed to share with others.

- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
