What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

According to the CDC, drowning is the second leading cause for death in children ages 1 to 14. Nearly 1000 children die from drowning in the US every year. For every child that drowns in the US, 7 receive emergency care for a drowning incident, which equates to around 8000 drowning incidents per year. Drowning is a massive threat to community safety and wellness. Yet, drowning is infrequently addressed, there is a lack of awareness and education for water safety, and swimming lessons are not prioritized as an activity for youth.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Life Jacket Distribution Program

Life jackets are a critical, water-safety tool. We fundraise to distribute life jackets to children in our learn-to-swim programs and also to youth through our partnerships with the YMCA, Rainer Athletes, and Seattle Pediatric Offices. We distribute over 500 life jackets on an annual basis to youth in the Greater Seattle area ages 6 months - 18 years old.
We also build life jacket loaner stations to encourage free, equitable access to life jackets at public beaches. In 2022, our life jackets were borrowed over 2000 times from our temporary stations. In 2023, we will be implementing five permanent life jacket loaner stations at beaches in Bellevue.

Population(s) Served

Swimming lessons can decrease the chance of drowning by 88% but many people do not have the opportunity to learn to swim.
We facilitate the creation of swimming programs in partnership with community groups to support youth, to promote critical life saving skills, and encourage a form of healthy exercise that they previously may not have had access to. We work as the community facilitator to bring together all necessary elements to support youth through learn-to-swim programs
We address the cultural exclusion from swimming lessons, by addressing language barriers for registration. We remove financial barriers by offering free lessons and a stipend for transportation to increase equitable access.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our leading goal is to save lives.
We are working to raise awareness of water safety and reduce the statistics around childhood drowning.
Our vision is for everyone to feel welcomed, and safe, within aquatic spaces.

We are providing educational resources, tools such as life jackets and water watcher badges as well as swim lessons to our community and those less fortunate.

We have partnered with the YMCA, local pediatrician’s offices, and other organizations such as Rainier Athletes to expand our capabilities and reach to achieve the goals we have set forth.

We have distributed over 600 life jackets to those in need, established 5 life jacket loaner stations on beaches, set up Water Watcher Badge distribution via pediatricians' offices, have a Teen Ambassador Program, Weekly Water Safety Awareness at the beach, and online resources for those seeking them.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
