Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma has a mission to support sarcoma research aimed at the prevention and treatment of sarcomas of all varieties.
The key to realizing this goal is RESEARCH! This research cost money and our goal is to raise funds to support research projects.
We are a fully volunteer organization, paying no salaries. Our overhead is 6% of the funds raised. Our Run/Walk and two Virtual Beer Tastings in 2021 allowed us to grant $250,000 in research funds. In 2021 we recieved 14 grant applications and funded six of them. In addition, we supported two ongoing research projects, provided seed money for a sarcoma research fund and provided an additional year's support for the tumor registry and tissue bank at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
PCS has an established 5K run/walk fund raiser each spring. This is coupled with virtual beer tasting events and a car show to raise funds for sarcoma research. Grant applications from regional researchers are solicited and reviewed by a medical advisory committee composed of research physicians. They are graded and recommendations for funding are submitted to the Board of Directors. Grants are then funded as money allows. A small amount of money is set aside for laboratory emergencies during the year.
