Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our vision is of a world where plastic wrap recycling at the pre-consumer level becomes an intrinsic part of every retail company's sustainability journey. We aspire to be the driving force behind a paradigm shift in waste management, catalyzing widespread adoption of our recycling support services and educational programs while fostering a culture of responsible consumption and environmental stewardship.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We aim to demonstrate to all our stakeholders that plastic wrap recycling can and should be normalised and adopted at scale by our municiple governments, businesses and communities as decreased plastic pollution benefits us all.
Specific stakeholder strategies are:
Retail Companies: Retail businesses are the primary beneficiaries of the Plastic Beach's services. They are essential stakeholders because their participation and commitment to recycling plastic wrap at the pre-consumer stage are crucial for the success of the Plastic Beach's mission.
*Consumers: Consumers play a vital role as stakeholders as their demand for sustainable practices influences retail companies' decisions. Their awareness and support for Plastic Beach's initiative can drive retail companies to adopt plastic wrap recycling services.
Plastic Beach’s Team and Leadership: The staff, volunteers, and leadership of Plastic Beach are essential stakeholders who drive the Plastic Beach's operations, strategy, and implementation of the recycling services. Their dedication and expertise are vital for achieving the Plastic Beach's goals.
*Partners and Collaborators: Collaborative partners such as recycling facilities, waste management companies, and sustainability Plastic Beachs are key stakeholders. They contribute to the implementation of the recycling services and provide expertise and resources.
*Government and Regulatory Agencies: These stakeholders influence policies and regulations related to recycling and waste management. Collaboration with these entities can help create an enabling environment for the adoption of plastic wrap recycling at the pre-consumer level.
Industry Associations: Associations related to retail, packaging, and sustainability play a role in influencing industry practices. Partnering with these associations can help promote the adoption of sustainable practices among retail companies.
Investors and Donors: Financial supporters, including investors and donors, are vital stakeholders. Their contributions provide the necessary funding for Plastic Beach's operations, expansion, and impact.
Local Communities: The communities where retail companies operate are indirectly impacted by Plastic Beach's mission. Greater recycling efforts can lead to reduced plastic pollution and a cleaner environment, benefiting local residents.
Educational Institutions: Schools, colleges, and universities are stakeholders because they contribute to raising awareness about plastic pollution and recycling. They can also provide platforms for educational initiatives related to sustainability.
Media and Public Opinion: Media outlets, influencers, and public opinion shape public awareness and perception of recycling initiatives. Positive media coverage and public
support can amplify Plastic Beach's efforts.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Building of years of perserverance of hard won experience we are poised to be local leaders in the field of plastic wrap recycling - modeling real world solutions to our community.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since beginning operations in ealry 2022 we have already persuaded 20 San Diego area companies of all sizes and types, from local to multi-national, to adopt plastic wrap recycling, and have diverted over 32,000 lbs. of this material away from local landfill and into a robust recycling downstream - the US company TREX, who manufacture composite decking material out of it.
Our next steps are to expand our local connections and business partnerships to dramatically scale up the volumes of plastic wrap we interdict, and to show by doing, that this is a cause worth backing!
In addition, we seek to expand our reach to engage the local population of San Diego to offer education on this issue, alongside curbside collections.
