Hands on Minds On
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
our students learn through hands-on activities and projects that provide a valuable perspective on what’s possible for the future while instilling self-confidence. Did you know that hands-on participation versus other presentation styles, can lead to as much as 75% retention rate? At STARBASE Edwards, we have subject matter experts that allow students to experiment with trial and error, encourage critical thinking, and engage in kinesthetic learning. Incorporating hands-on learning at STARBASE can connect these activities to the real world. We would like to extend our program to reach more students and communities across Kern and Los Angeles area however we are limited with staff and resources.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
STEM
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education plays a critical role in preparing our youth for the future and their roles in our economy. Due to our technology-drive, society, it is essential that students are fueled with STEM as early as possible. At STARBASE Edwards, we provide students with the opportunity to visit military-civilian facilities, engage with STEM community leaders, and explore the STEM field in fun and engaging way. Through these activities, students are engaged in experiences in which they learn from and with other people, and because of that, are encouraged to think critically, innovatively, and creatively. STARBASE Edwards instructors are dedicated in providing golden opportunities to increase student’s STEM knowledge, creativity, and collaboration that go beyond the traditional classroom.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
STARBASE’s primary focus is the program for fifth graders. The goal is to motivate them to explore STEM opportunities as they continue their education. The academies serve students that are historically under represented in STEM. Students who live in inner cities or rural locations, those who are socio-economically disadvantaged, low in academic performance, or have a disability are in the target group. The program encourages students to set goals and achieve them.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
we are providing outreach opportunities to local schools, publishing how to STEM videos on all of our social media platfroms. Providing STEM extension lessons to Antelope Valley teachers and coordinating with NASA educators to develop STEM webinars during the COVID pandemic in which teachers are able to earn credit hours towards certification.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are our a team consisting of four individuals (one director, 2 instructors, and administrative assistant). We believe that all children can achieve personal and educational success through applied positive actions.
We maintain a strong, relevant, age appropriate curriculum and effective presentation by keeping abreast of the latest in educational research, considering real-world needs, utilizing the robust national curriculum modules, and by coordinating with the local school districts to demonstrate how we can meet their teachers’ and students’ requirements. We foster a climate of positive cooperation and communication essential to productive teamwork, and vital in goal accomplishment. We serve as a model to educators and students for life-long learning, personal goal-setting, positive team interaction, and a spirit of community volunteerism. We are committed to raising public awareness of the need for scientific and engineering literacy and exemplary teaching
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Participated in a variety of outreach program to include Junior Test Pilot School, Women in Aviation, Antelope Valley Airshow. Graduates 1711 students from the program and embedded emerging technology to include VR, Arduino technology, and Co2 Dragsters from Pitsco. Created a Nonprofit organization under a government entity to help support students at risk and historically underrepresented.

- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
