Mission

The mission of Youth TimeBanking (YTB) is providing youth-adult partnerships that support youth with service opportunities to build community connections. Youth participate in service exchanges that build strengths, connections, community, and competence. Members earn credits and opportunities for things they need: food, school supplies, an introduction, internet access, digital inclusion, sports gear, supplies for arts & crafts, lessons, coaching, a technology accessory, or gift card to support the local economy. YTB project themes are Community C.A.L.M. - Care-Apps-Learn-Make projects - Youth A.R.E. - Assets, Resources, Energy.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

YTB Global addresses four areas across the framework of YTB Community CALM. Care, Apps, Learn, and Make opportunities address: 1) social isolation and lack of opportunities for youths in underprivileged areas in Florida and East Africa, 2) digital inclusion for refugee and rural youth with limited access to technology, 3) shared learning opportunities between YTB locations along with support/re-integration for youth in recovery, and 4) low-cost projects for rural schools and village communities to use ISSB technology to build classrooms, affordable housing, and waste management enclosures. ISSB is Interlocking Stabilized Soil Block technology. ISSB machines are human powered, eco-friendly, and safe for youth-adult partnerships in communities to operate.

YTB Africa Projects

YTB Projects are in Mukono, Uganda and Kisumu, Kenya and Yaounde', Cameroon. Mukono's main projects include ISSB Classroom, Community Crochet, Community Cleanup, and School-based YTB. ISSB is Interlocking Stabilized Soil Blocks. The project in Mukono is building a classroom for a rural school which was destroyed in a spring storm in 2022. Another project at a different rural school will build a safety wall around a rural school. Kisumu's main projects are the ISSB project and vertical gardens to increase food security. The YTB team plans to build a shed for a tool-lending library and teach community members how to work with the ISSB machine. In Yaounde', YTB members work in a youth-adult partnership with gender equity so that everyone can be involved. We follow principles from Timebanking, Co-Production, and Liberating Structures to develop strengths, build connections, develop community, and build competence.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The main purpose of YTB is to work with community leaders to establish youth-adult partnerships to fully engage youth in community development. We want to bring new opportunities to youth and recognize their contributions.

YTB puts youth-adult partnerships at the center of community development - youth build social connections, earn time credits, and receive resources for their community contributions.

Mission: YTB provides youth with service opportunities to “pay it forward”, earn rewards and build community connections.

Vision: Youth are engaged with community and their needs are addressed. YTB is a youth-adult partnership. Youth develop strengths, increase social capital, co-produce projects, serve as cross-age coaches.

YTB Community CALM is YTB's model. Care activities are service oriented. Apps activities involve the use of technology for good. Learn activities develop community literacy. Make activities are hands-on and inspire community engagement.

Young people are addressing concerns like social isolation, climate change, digital divide, substance use and other things they care about.

YTB draws on principles from TimeBanking, Co-Production, and Liberating Structures to involve everyone.

YTB has strong connections with community leaders in Mukono, Uganda; Kisumu, Kenya; Yaoundé, Cameroon; and Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida. We consult with national leaders in the TimeBanking movement. We learn from experts in human development through association with TCOM: Transformation Collaborative Outcomes Management. Our giving platform is with Every.org/YTBGlobal. Technology resources and insights are drawn from involvement with TechSoup Global and TechSoup Connect.

YTB Global - youth-adult-professional partnership - completed construction of a classroom for a rural school in Mukono, Uganda in July 2023. This school was destroyed by a spring storm in 2022. YTB invested in ISSB Technology in September 2022. The entire community has been involved in the spirit YTB-driven co-production to accomplish this unprecedented goal.

In October 2022, faced with the threat of an Ebola crisis, YTB Uganda began a small Community Crochet project to keep youth engaged and learning. That project expanded to include hundreds of learners at two rural schools. Their handiwork can be seen at https://tinyurl.com/YTBcrochet.

In March 2023, a community leader from Kisumu, Kenya traveled to Mukono for ISSB training. A community project in Kisumu Village is underway. This ISSB project is called BomaBora.

In June 2023, YTB Tampa will started with youth leaders connected to the local refugee community.
During July-August 2023, YTB Cameroon established an office presence in the capital city of Yaounde'.
During September 2023 teams in Kenya will learn about community inclusion currency to support members of rural communities to withstand the pain of increasing inflation and growing insecurity for basic life needs of food, clothing, shelter.
