What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Deep Heart works to combat the mental atrophy common among the homeless and incarcerated due to lack of human interaction. According to a 2016 study, receiving visits and having outside support reduced an inmate’s chance of recidivism by over 25%. Yet a 2018 Cornell University Study that reported 50% of inmates incarcerated for a year or longer will NEVER receive visitors. Due to lack of funding, information or resources, correctional facilities and centers that provide community and social services are frequently unable to provide even the most basic exposure to music, the arts or productive, social interaction. Approximately 90% of all learning is visual. A person is 60% more likely to remember what is taught if it is tied to a visual cue, such as the performing arts.

The Deep Heart Demonstration

The Deep Heart Demonstration is a mobile-theater production of the performing arts that combines elements from traditional theater, the circus, multi-cultural music & dance with modern magic, comedy, graphic arts, motivational speaking and audience participation. It provides participants with a transformational experience of personal awakening that inspires hope, healing and unity. We travel across the world performing, at no charge to participants, in correctional facilities, prisons, shelters, hospitals, for at-risk youth, in low-income communities and neighborhoods.

- Utilizing specifically designed and proven methods of the performing arts as rehabilitative therapy, our show stimulates critical & creative thinking, promotes catharsis, and generates personal reflection. From the deliberate use of a vocabulary that is humanizing and identity affirming to creating acts that are readily relatable to our audience and therefore more effectively promote learning and memory retention, the Deep Heart Demonstration covers all the personal and professional bases in positively impacting our target demographic, including those who do not typically respond to more conventional means of mental and behavioral reform. By effectively educating the audience on practical solutions to daily challenges, while entertaining them with an upbeat visual display that adapts to their culture and way of life, we gift participants with powerful tools for rehabilitation, transformation and hope.

Performance Details:

- The show varies from 1.5-3.0 hours in duration, presenting a wide range of innovative, educational and mentally stimulating entertainment, including but not limited to: magic, comedy, dance choreographies, audience participation, theater acts, live music and vocalists, martial arts demonstrations and motivational speaking.

- The number of attendees to each show is dependent on venue and facility operating conditions, with numbers ranging from 80-1500 possible participants. Annually, with a projected two tours per year, the Deep Heart Demonstration will reach 12,000-17,000 inmates personally and 10,000-15,000 other members of our target demographic, at over 60 different facilities, with the potential for exponential growth.

- Because we operate as our own mobile theater troupe and crew, with our own equipment, props and stage set-up, Deep Heart meets a unique need in that we can bring this show directly to audiences who would otherwise never be able to attend an event of the performing arts in traditional venues.

- At the end of every performance, we set aside time in which we, the performers, can “visit” with individual members of the audience, hear their stories, establish a personal connection and offer ongoing support and friendship.

Deep Heart Operation was developed to take advantage of our touring schedule to provide material support to the homeless population, those recently released from incarceration and others in need, in the cities in which we perform.

- As we tour performing the Deep Heart Demonstration, we give away pre-prepared packets of non-perishable food, meals, hygiene items, rain ponchos & aluminum blankets to the homeless and needy wherever we meet them.

- We provide personalized care for individuals whom we encounter repeatedly in the course of our work. Whether it’s bringing them a hot meal, specific food due to dietary restrictions, filling a prescription, providing transportation to a medical appointment, buying a wheelchair or specific clothing, we treat everyone as an individual, a human being with the right to request/receive aid provided with respect and compassion.

- We assist individuals who are actively seeking housing or employment by offering them: transportation assistance by paying for local bus passes or bike rental services, prepaid phone cards, personal coaching on interviewing & how to write a resume, purchasing a suit or appropriate clothing and haircuts and assistance in securing opportunities using any local contacts or resources we may have.

- Deep Heart Operation may also, at the discretion of the Board of Directors and on a case-by-case basis, offer financial aid to certain individuals, who have already proven themselves to be trustworthy, to help secure temporary housing, make a deposit on an apartment, purchase tools, certifications or supplies required for employment or other needs that further our exempt purposes in providing material support to the individual. This also lessens the burden on state and federal social services. In such instances, Deep Heart will continue to monitor the recipient to ensure a responsible use of the monetary aid for intended purposes.

- Deep Heart Operation will distribute approx. 3,000-5,000 personal aid packets and provide more extensive material aid and on-going support to approx. 200-500 individual recipients annually.

Drawing from over ten years of experience working in 220 prisons worldwide, Deep Heart created its magazine, DEEP HEART UNBOUND, specifically written and designed for those incarcerated or otherwise isolated, families, and all those suffering in these difficult times. At 28 full-color pages, with a diverse array of articles, stories, art, and photos, this publication will provide hours of educational, inspirational, and thought-provoking reading material, meeting the overwhelming need in correctional facilities for quality, innovative literature.

UNBOUND content is dynamic, ground-breaking, and practically helpful to individuals from all walks of life. Every edition is themed and built around an inspiring, comforting, and transformative message. DEEP HEART will be shipping copies, on request, to facilities around the country, as well as providing them, free of charge, to all audience members of the DEEP HEART DEMONSTRATION and participants in DEEP HEART OPERATION. The first run is 5,000 copies. This number is expected to grow exponentially, as DEEP HEART builds production and distribution partnerships, to meet overwhelming demand.

Launched in the fall of 2020, DEEP HEART UNBOUND aims to become a quarterly publication. Deep Heart is currently looking for partners to help with printing and distribution, as well as advertisers.
