What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Boca Raton community has a rapidly growing population of children with special needs. According to the CDC research reports for 2015-17, 17% of children aged 3-17 years had a developmental disability, and even more importantly and the percentage is increasing each year. This segment of our society is falling through the cracks and in tremendous need of resources and support. Without programs like Friendship House, Children with special needs often find themselves isolated from everyday activities and socialization opportunities, lack friends, and feel lonesome and forgotten. Friendship House is addressing this gap in services for children with special needs in the Boca Raton area. Friendship House simultaneously impacts multiple populations by pairing typical high school and community volunteers with children with special needs creating a socially integrated environment where all can grow, develop and thrive.

Sunday Circle

Sunday Circle is a two-hour drop-off program creating a wonderful respite opportunity for parents. This program offers a unique opportunity for children and teens to gain from group activities while still receiving one-on-one attention from their buddies. Participants partake in structured activities and free play. Specialized art, music, and dance raise the spirits and promote creativity, while sports activities exercise gross motor skills and promote physical fitness. The teen volunteers help their special friends engage and participate in all of the fun and exciting activities while making sure they feel loved and valued.

Young adults with special needs enjoy a monthly program aimed at facilitating socialization with peers and young adult volunteers. The goal of this program is to give young adults with special needs the opportunity to make friends and hang out outside of the home in a fun, safe, and relaxed environment. We have organized activities for everyone to participate in that will help build confidence, social skills, and life skills…all while building memories and fostering friendships that will last years!

Friendship House family programming provides families with different opportunities to join together with other families who also have children with special needs for fun, entertainment, and socialization for parents and children alike. Friendship House aims to provide whole family engagement and support through coming together to celebrate the Jewish holidays and specially designed events for their entire family to enjoy. Our holiday programming offers our families and children a chance to experience the Jewish holidays in an environment where they feel comfortable and welcomed.

Sports Circle is an after-school program that gives children with special needs a wonderful opportunity to engage in different sports and extracurricular activities. The sports are led by an experienced coach, with one-on-one volunteers available to assist each child with the soccer games and fun. It provides a reliable weekly program for parents while participants engage in learning new skills and values such as team building, fine-tuning gross motor skills, breath and relaxation techniques, and connecting and interacting with friends.

Population(s) Served

An extraordinary program that provides your child with the chance to bond with their volunteers in a setting in which they are most comfortable, their own homes. Volunteers work with their special friend and their families to establish a schedule that works for both. With so much to look forward to, these visits are cherished by both the children and volunteers.

Children and their volunteers spend an hour each week baking cookies, playing games, creating arts ‘n crafts, reading books or doing just about anything fun! Having his or her friends over to play – an activity taken for granted by most children – instills immense feelings of belonging and self-value in a child with special needs.

While children and volunteers develop meaningful relationships, parents receive valuable time to rest and recharge. With so much to look forward to at these visits, it is no wonder the families wait all week for their volunteers to show up at their doorsteps!

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our mission is to transform the lives of people with special needs, their families, volunteers, and eventually society. Friendship House provides programs to address the gap in services for children and youth with special needs throughout Boca Raton. Every year we aim to serve 65 families + with special needs and utilize 80 high school student and community volunteers through our 50+ events.

Our goals are to do the following:

1. Create programs that encourage children with and without disabilities to participate together to enjoy enrichment activities such as sports, arts, performance arts, social events, taking field trips around town, and visiting Boca sites.

2. Provide a safe, accepting, and friendly environment where all participants of all abilities can socialize, improve communication skills, and learn life skills while participating in Friendship House programming.

3. Give our parents with children with special needs respite time, provide connections with other parents, and provide informational seminars and workshops on various topics related to the special needs community.

4. Our short-term goal is to expand staffing to grow our social programming.

6. Our ultimate goal is to provide opportunities to people of all abilities to contribute, learn, develop, and thrive in their communities.

Strategic Goals

1. Expand staffing to grow our programming.

2. Partner with other organizations and corporations who provide services to the special needs community to bring high quality services to the Boca Raton community.

3. Concentrate efforts on building strong volunteer programs, including recruitment, training, and retention.

4. Work with the Board of Directors to ensure financial sustainability of all new ventures.

5. Provide professional development for staff and educational workshops for parents.
