Inclusion and Untra-Accessiblity

The Morgan’s Wonderland Inclusion Foundation (MWIF) is one of many highly visible initiatives launched by philanthropists Gordon and Maggie Hartman to promote inclusion and help those with special needs. In all their endeavors, the Hartmans credit daughter Morgan, who has dealt with cognitive and physical special needs since birth, as the inspiration for their passion and generosity. The momentum generated by the opening of the unique Morgan’s Wonderland theme park in 2010 has led to the construction of other Ultra-Accessible™, fully-inclusive entities where individuals of all ages and all abilities can come together for fun and a better understanding of one another.

MWIF was established in 2020 to coordinate fundraising, planning, and communication among all Morgan’s Wonderland-associated projects. The new foundation looks to generous organizations, businesses, and individuals to further increase the growth of the Morgan’s Wonderland “family” and help expand the mission of inclusion. MWIF seeks sustained funding and support to ensure success for Morgan’s Wonderland and its sister entities for years to come.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Morgan’s Inclusion Initiative is more than a nonprofit organization; it’s a movement of inclusion. Our organization oversees five Ultra-AccessibleTM, fully-inclusive facilities where individuals of all ages and all abilities can come together for recreation and a better understanding of one another. At our core, we believe that everyone deserves the right to enjoy and experience life, regardless of cognitive or physical ability. By removing barriers, we can help bring together people of all abilities to understand each other better and build friendships and a better world.

Morgan's Wonderland and “family” entities of Morgan’s Inclusion Initiative are places where people of all abilities can play and enjoy barrier-free services, especially those with disabilities who previously had to observe from the sidelines. Never-been-done-before Morgan’s Wonderland theme park has become a world leader in promoting inclusion – bringing together those with and without special needs to better understand one another. In doing so, it has shined the spotlight on our hometown of San Antonio, Texas, which the City Council proclaimed in 2015 as “Inclusion City, USA”, thereby putting us on the map and in a position to inspire change worldwide. Inclusion is the idea that all people have the right to be included in and interact with their community and accessibility is the process by which we make inclusion happen. All Morgan's Inclusion Initiative programs and projects believe in the power of inclusion and accessibility, and we are asking for you to join us through your support.

We also learned that many families desiring to visit us face financial burdens associated with having a family member with special needs. Morgan's Wonderland and its nonprofit sister entities are Ultra-Accessible™ and designed to eliminate physical barriers, and with your help, we can eliminate economic barriers, too. Countless children and adults with special needs do not have access to facilities that enable them to fully enjoy outdoor recreation due to cost or accessibility. Morgan's Wonderland is changing that!

Morgan's Wonderland is the centerpiece of Morgan's Inclusion Initiative, the 501c3 public charity that coordinates planning, fundraising, and communication among all Morgan’s Wonderland projects and venues.

Morgan’s Inclusion Initiative is proud of many examples of Ultra-Accessibility™ in San Antonio, Texas. Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island are completely wheelchair-accessible parks, unlike other theme or splash parks in the country. All rides and attractions can accommodate guests in wheelchairs and be enjoyed by people of all ages and all abilities. Both parks include wider walkways for increased circulation and accessibility and attention to paint color selections, sound, and lighting for those with increased sensitivities. Morgan’s Inspiration Island also pushed the boundaries and helped fund the University of Pittsburgh’s Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL) research to develop the revolutionary PneuChair™; a waterproof wheelchair powered entirely by compressed air. The PneuChair™ allows guests who use an electric wheelchair independently in the community to maintain their independence. Guests should not be requested to limit themselves by being asked to modify their experience due to their needs and require additional support for them to participate in water activities. Without a waterproof wheelchair, many guests would not be able to enjoy the splash park for fear of damaging their personal chair, which they use every day. Morgan’s Wonderland Camp also utilizes the PneuChair™ in its Ultra-Accessible™ aquatic play areas within the camp.

Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island also eliminate economic barriers and obstacles that impact many guests. Both parks welcome any individual with physical or developmental disabilities free of charge. This commitment is made because families caring for individuals with disabilities often must allocate significant portions of the family budget for medical care, prescriptions, therapies, caregivers, specialized transportation, and the like.

Morgan’s Wonderland Sports offers no-cost programming to athletes with visual impairments and physical disabilities through the South Texas Regional Adaptive and Para Sports (STRAPS) program.

Through a vibrant partnership with the Special Olympics of Texas, Morgan’s Wonderland Sports is developing an inclusive sports program that will offer sports-based opportunities to individuals of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities at no cost.

Morgan’s Wonderland Camp has created a partnership model with reduced pricing for nonprofits serving individuals with disabilities and is committed to offering direct programming options throughout the year at no cost to these individuals.
