Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The goal of the Los Alamos Historical Society is to respected worldwide as the source and repository for the compelling history of Los Alamos and its people from prehistory to contemporary times. Development of an upgraded archives facility, opening the Oppenheimer House to the public, and a major renovation to the Historical Museum offer new opportunities to share the stories of Los Alamos. These must be successfully integrated into current thriving programs – publications, lectures, oral histories, and the popular museum itself. The seven strategies listed below provide a path to that goal, to guide the activities of the board and staff in coming years.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Energize our interpretive opportunities and museum while expanding the stories of our community’s people;
Develop accessible historical archives and collections in accordance with best practices and standards;
Preserve the integrity of Los Alamos National Landmark Historic District;
Nourish our Publications Division and recognize it as a fundamental element of our storytelling;
Collaborate in the establishment of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park;
Partner with local, state, and national entities;
Ensure a sustainable future in order to meet its mission.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Los Alamos Historical Society has an energetic staff; an active, engaged board of directors; a group of dedicated volunteers; and the largest membership for any historical society in the state of New Mexico. In addition, the organization receives significant direct and in-kind support, including space for the museum, a brand new archives facility, and office space in a historic building, from the local government. These assets ensure the Historical Society is capable of achieving its goals and strategies.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Los Alamos Historical Society Archives have recently moved into a new facility. With the new space, more volunteers are coming forward to help in the archives, as well. The Manhattan Project National Historical Park has passed the U.S. House and has passed through committee in the Senate. Collaborations with local cultural service providers have resulted in a summer time, "Late Friday Night" series of events that are drawing more people to the downtown.
