What we aim to solve
HMI is working to address the pressing need of a regenerative food system that addresses the environmental challenges caused by poor soil and land health that leads to issues of water and air quality, food insecurity, and rural abandonment and lack of economic development opportunities.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Beginning Farmers & Ranchers
Beginning Farmers & Ranchers The objective of this program is to educate and empower beginning farmers and ranchers so that they are positioned to apply Holistic Management principles and practices in order to build successful businesses. While the program can be adapted to any group with less than ten years of experience, our initial implementation is focused on women farmers – where the need is great as there are currently approximately 165,000 farms run by women and demographic, social, and economic factors indicate the number will keep rising. The initial program was funded in October 2009 via a grant from the USDA/NIFA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program and this allowed for recruiting and training 90 beginning women farmers in New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine for 3 years for a total of 270 women. In addition to the educational component of the program, twelve sites were identified to collect baseline biological monitoring data over the next few years and the participants agreed to try various soil health improvement practices. The results to date have been significant. 95% of participants said they gained confidence in writing a business plan & understood its significance beyond usefulness for obtaining a bank loan83% of participants said they will tie their marketing decisions to their holisticgoal/farm mission statement82% of participants committed to monitoring soil health as a result of the soil fertility class88% of participants said they would structure farm/family meetings differently based on the skills they learned in the leadership class HMI is committed to the Beginning Farmers program and will continue working with our initial group of women farmers and is currently planning to roll the program out to additional farmers and ranchers in other communities.
Open Gate On-Farm Learning Series
The Open Gate On-Farm Learning Series consists of farm/ranch days that are held on the land throughout the U.S. Each day is hosted by an experienced Holistic Management practitioner and features numerous innovative and sustainable agricultural topics and practices.
Getting Started Online Learning
This online program teaches various modules of the whole farm/ranch planning training through interactive webinars and mentoring for farmers and ranchers anywhere in the world.
Whole Farm/Ranch Business Planning/Land Management Program
This program teaches farmers and ranchers how to manage their businesses and their natural resources sustainably.
Certified Educator Training Program
Our two-year train the trainer program trains agricultural professionals to effectively facilitate whole farm/ranch planning.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
HMI's vision is a world where lands and communities flourish through the practice of Holistic Management, an internationally recognized regenerative agricultural practice.
HMI has three major goals:
1. Inspire, motivate, support and train farmers, ranchers, funders, conservationists, environmentalists, and food advocates to practice and support Holistic Management.
2. Achieve greater organizational effectiveness and financial stability.
3. Increase our programming capacity by improving and growing our network of Holistic Management Certified Educators and partners in the U.S. and abroad.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
HMI's strategies are built around our three objectives. Those strategies include:
1. Increasing the number of acres managed under Holistic Management
2. Increase the number of farmers and ranchers trained in Holistic Mangement
3. Growing and refining the On-Line Distance Learning Program
4. Deploy the new Holistic Cropping Curriculum
5. Increase awareness and provide information on Holistic Management and HMI through the HMI website
6. Create awareness of Holistic Management and HMI programs through the use of social media
7. Support international programs
8. Support, engage, and train Holistic Management Certified Educators in scale programming
9. Increase number of partners/collaborators by 5% annually to effectively scale HMI programming
10 Manage finances sustainably
11. Evaluation of programs completed and reported on within a reasonable amount of time

What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
By following our strategic plan, which was initially created in 2014 we have seen a greater demand for our training. HMI's diverse board is also an asset; providing the organization with the ability to reach a variety of audiences in numerous countries.
HMI also has a passionate practitioner community, which does well in spreading the word about the benefits of Holistic Management.
Both board and staff are 100% committed to our mission with many different skills sets. Our streamlined staff is fully focused on teaching Holistic Management to farmers and ranchers, while also running an efficient, viable non-profit organization.
In HMI's 5-year strategic plan, all objectives are clearly defined, with responsible parties defined, and measurement and progress updated annually.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
As an organization that is 35 years + in age, we continue to make progress towards our vision. Our staff and our board are dedicated to our mission and our vision, and we continue to evolve as an educational organization by continually updating our curriculum to better serve our community of farmers, ranchers, and food advocates. Our pool of Holistic Management Certified Educators remains robust. We meticulously track the results of all of our programs. These results are analyzed for both program strengths and weaknesses.
As our programming has grown, so has our collaboration with similar organizations, as well as government entities. We continue to add to our list of collaborators, knowing that organizations together can accomplish much more than a single organization ever will.
To date, HMI has trained more than 50,000 people and has influenced 40 million acres of land in 130 countries.
