What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
1. Sustainable Forestry (using the waste from small diameter trees to create value added economic opportunities such as no emissions charcoal/wood preservation, production of edible, high protein mushrooms, animal feed from mushroom spent substrate of innoculated slash as well as restoration and enhancement of soils within thinned forest. Partner with Picuris Pueblo and assisting in moving from pilot project to a new commercial enterprise based on pilot project.
2. Wastewater treatment/farming system where all human (and animal) wastes are treated and converted to create value added benefits from crop (organic) and fish farming (no antibiotics); growing mushrooms, algae for cattle feed, vermiculture (worms) for chickens, etc., and methane energy. Working with small communities, tribes and dairies to get a pilot project going.
3. Plan to start a pilot projects to use condensation from flowing cold water in underground tubes to grow crops without actually consuming the water but using the condensation and returning water to source undiminished in quantity and quality.
4. K-12 Education Initiative which stimulates academic learning, emotional intelligence, artistic expression and an understanding of natural systems through community service-based learning. We are working with poor communities in northern New Mexico with high drop out rates, gang problems, drugs, etc. Also working with University of NM School of Architecture and Planning, and with NM State University, Dept. of Horticulture and Agronomy, to use ZERI learning principles and methodology through stories, workbooks, actual community based projects and course materials, programs and methodology.
5. Other projects that are in the early planning stages include: (1) soil regeneration using basalt rock dusts, native fungi and wood chips to restore and increase healthy soils on eroded lands as well as using same method for a mine reclamation pilot; (2) looking at master planning for an eco-industrial park which produces no waste or pollution and uses all its raw materials to create further value added opportunities;(3) looking at using the overgrown invasive species salt cedar as a raw material for new rural businesses in charcoal production, edible mushroom growing and using the substrate as a soil enrichment.
