Funding Justice for All
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Civil legal assistance and advocacy can remove economic barriers to meeting basic human needs for people living in poverty and promote financial and family stability. Unfortunately, due to the lack of funding from federal, state, and private sources, 80% of people seeking legal aid are turned away each year in New Mexico. Without essential legal representation and advocacy, the things we all value most – our rights, freedom, homes, livelihoods, and families – go unprotected.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Annual Campaign
Equal Access to Justice (www.eaj-nm.org) raises funds through an annual fundraising campaign to help fund three of NM's largest legal aid providers: New Mexico Legal Aid, DNA-People's Legal Services, and New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty. Contributions are received primarily from the legal community. The three organizations are funded through unrestricted, noncompetitive grants.
* New Mexico Legal Aid provides statewide civil legal services and is the voice, defender and advocate for poor people who are seeking justice in all forums, particularly in the communities in which they live.
* The New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty advances economic and social justice through education, advocacy, and litigation.
* DNA People’s Legal Services (DNA) provides access to justice to those who are low income and vulnerable by providing high quality legal services and education while respecting tribal sovereignty and cultural traditions.
Access to Justice Commission participation
Equal Access to Justice participates in the NM Access to Justice Commission in its efforts to expand and improve civil legal assistance in the state.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Equal Access to Justice aims to ensure safety and security for all, not just those who can afford it.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We accomplish this through providing unrestricted, noncompetitive funds to three civil legal aid and advocacy organizations that meet critical legal needs of New Mexicans: New Mexico Legal Aid, NM Center on Law & Poverty, and DNA-People's Legal Services. Contributions are received primarily from New Mexico attorneys and law firms.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Equal Access to Justice has a strong history of generous contributions from many of NM's largest law firms as well as loyal individual donors. The organization's volunteer board leadership are well-respected in the legal field and its Executive Director highly regarded in the fundraising community. Additionally, the collaborative nature of the relationship among the providers is a strong asset to our success.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Equal Access to Justice has supported civil legal aid services and advocacy with millions of dollars in unrestricted grants over its 30+ year history. We hope to continue providing critical support in the future, possibly in closer collaboration with other funding entities.
