The Forest Stewards Guild
Putting the Forest First
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Forests are endangered and they are essential to a sustainable future. The altered climate and attendant threats such as extreme wildfire and insect outbreaks are killing forests. At the same time, society is asking our forests to do more to help mitigate climate change and provide for a growing population. Land stewards need practical, science-based guidance on climate-smart forestry for each ecoregion. The Guild helps stewards of the land across the country practice ecologically, economically, and socially responsible forestry.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Forest Stewards Youth Corps
The mission of the Forest Stewards Youth Corps program is to provide career training in natural resources for 16-19 year olds from forest dependent communities in New Mexico that have few employment opportunities. Since it's inception, the FSYC program has employed over 500 youth, achieved 200,000 hours of conservation service and education, awarded over 200 hours of college credit, and invested over $3 million in rural New Mexico communities. Corps members have gone on to build successful careers in natural resource management and become strong leaders in their communities.
Ecological Forestry Research
The Forest Stewards Guild research program carries out the Guild's mission by synthesizing and conducting scientific research to support our science based advocacy, field meetings, Model Forests, and members' land stewardship. Science goes hand in hand with Guild member's place-based experience to guide the practice of ecologically, economically, and socially responsible forestry. Guild research plays a key role as a moderating voice in forest debates because we strive to balance the ecological and economic concerns that are often in conflict. We develop informational resources that help people and communities engaged in forest stewardship. We also assist research scientists and organizations in incorporating the place-based experiential knowledge, perspectives, and needs of foresters and other natural resource professionals.
Women Owning Woodlands
Women Owning Woodlands (WOW) empowers women landowners to steward their land by connecting them to information, resources, trusted professionals, and a community of women land owners. WOW connects you to training workshops around the country to enable women landowners to take action toward the future of their land.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Guild’s goal is to see forests across the country managed to the highest standards that ensure economic, social, and ecological health. The Guild engages in education, training, policy analysis, research, and advocacy to foster excellence in stewardship. We support stewards of the land and engage a broader community in the challenges of forest conservation and management.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Guild practices the stewardship we promote. Guild staff are very busy “on-the-ground" with leadership and training programs in prescribed fire, workshops for landowners, and direct forest management. The Guild also stays present and engaged in pressing forestry-related policies and discussions nationally and at local levels. The successes and challenges of practicing stewardship inform our training, research, and policy advocacy. The work our staff does in forested landscapes supports the work of our members in advancing ecological forestry across the country. Partners from the federal to local levels also engage with the Guild through collaborations on programming, landscape-level projects, and special initiatives.
