Gentle Giants
Together We Can Create A Better World For Captive Elephants
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Gentle Giants aims to address the problem with re-homing captive bull elephants to a sanctuary life. Many sanctuaries do not take bull elephants due to the fact the are much more expensive to house. Female elephants can be together in a herd, whereas bull elephants must be housed in separate, expensive & strong, enclosures.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Meet the herd/ sponsor an elephant
Elephant Sponsorship - to ensure elephants have necessary food & care. Allowing the elephants to remain home, chain free in the forest with their herd. Keeping them out of the terrible, suffering life of the logging and/or tourist industry.
Sponsor a Mahout (Elephant Caretaker)
A Mahout is the most important person in the life of an elephant, that is living in any form of captivity in Asia. They are the ones who tend to all the needs of the elephants and are who know them the best. From being able to tell when the elephant is not comfortable, is tired, or hungry; to when they are not feeling well. All of this makes the mahout's job extremely important. Sadly, for a very long time, their hard work has gone unrecognized. The mahouts are made to work long hours with very little pay. They are also forced to leave their homes and families behind. This is why, at Gentle Giants, we are committed to pay the mahouts who work in our program(S) fair wages. We want them to be able to, not only support their families, but not have to leave them and their village homes behind.
Pampering Elephants & Supporting Local Farmers
By purchasing fresh fruit and vegetable from local farmers, we are not only providing the elephants with healthy supplemented food/nutrients, but supporting the community.
Small Business & Corporate Sponsorships
An additional way to help support those gentle giants already under our care, while allowing us to bring more needy ones into our Project. This also gives small businesses and corporation, from around the world, a opportunity to not only give back, receive a tax deduction, but advertise on our website.
Shelter Program
Many of the villages were not prepared for their elephants to return home. They have no shelters built for them. Many shelters were destroyed during the wet season and fires. All elephants, particularly the mothers and young babies need a place to protect them during the night and from the elements throughout the day.
Strong enclosures for the young bull elephants need to be constructed to ensure that they can continue to live chain free and not be subjected to phajaan (or the 'crush).
Gentle Giant Allies
Any organization or individual whom wants to join our cause, walk with us, and help save Thailand's captive elephants is welcome. Under the ally program, a organization, corporation, group or individual donates $10K+ and offers continual support. They are featured on our websites Home page. Allies are just one step under our Partner.

Rice Ball Program
Inadequate nutrition can have detrimental effects on any elephants mental and physical well-being. It can lead to stunted growth, compromising their strength, bone density, and muscle development, making them more prone to injuries. Additionally, insufficient nutrition can impair cognitive development, affecting their learning abilities, problem-solving skills, and natural behaviors. Behavioral issues, such as aggression, restlessness, and abnormal social interactions, may arise as a result of malnutrition. Weakened immune systems and increased vulnerability to diseases and infections are also common consequences.
Our rice-ball program not only offers supplemental nutrition to the elephants under our care; all ingredients of these healthy treats are locally sourced & made by the community. helping the local farmers & rice growers, as well as, providing work to the village men and woman; who otherwise wouldn't have enough to make ends meet.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We are aiming at establishing a bull reserve, in Thailand, for both juvenile and elderly bull elephants so that they can live out their lives free from chains, slavery and abuse. More recent research has shown that bull elephants are not the solitary animals once thought. They continue to socialize throughout their lives. For example: "Denver Zoo's three, male Asian elephants have reached “a rare accomplishment”. Few institutions hold unrelated bulls that cohabitate in shared space. But Denver's Groucho, Bodhi and Billy are now sharing space." Further, research is finding that mature bulls are institutional in teaching skills to younger bulls.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We are working with our partner, Lek Chailert of Save Elephant Foundation. Lek Chailert has the required land & resources available to establish a bull elephant habitat. This will require a great deal of funding as we have recently rescued two baby bulls who will need enclosures that cost an est. $100K USD each. We will be hiring local community construction to build. We will be putting money back into the communities by sourcing all needed materials locally. We will provide jobs to new elephant caretakers needed to care for the bull elephants.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
In three short years, Gentle Giants Nonprofit as routinely demonstrated our ability to meet our goals. We have developed a stable community of supporters. We have continual social media growth and reach. We have experience and knowledge to make this happen. We have a strong partnership with Lek Chailert, who has been involved in rescuing elephants and building habitats for over 25 years.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We are still in the planning process. We have the necessary, required land available to us. We have rescued 2 new baby bull elephants that will need a permanent home within the next 5 years and already started raising the funds for this. Our next steps are to start planning the infrastructure so that we can determine exactly which steps need to be built first and amount of funds for each.
