What we aim to solve
When someone has survived such an ordeal like a natural disaster or having to migrate due to conflict, they lose so much of their memories, keepsakes, and family heirlooms in addition to their homes and belongings. Having to start over and rebuild their lives is already a lot for anyone to go through. At Retake, we know we can't recreate all those lost memories, but we can offer them new ones in this next chapter in their lives. We can hear their stories, hear what is most important to them, and come up with creative and beautiful new photographs and portraits for them to proudly hang on their walls. We can offer them new memories that can be passed down to future generations.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Disaster Survivors Photos
We offer our services to people who have survived disasters and have lost their homes and belongings. From fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, and more, we offer free photoshoots to those recovering so they can have new framed photos to put on their walls as they rebuild.
Conflict Survivors Photos
We offer our services to people who come from war-torn or conflict areas who have been forced to relocate and are now refugees, immigrants, migrants, displaced people, or asylum seekers. As they had to leave so much behind to start over, we want to create new family photos and framed keepsakes that they can hang on their walls.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We want to help ease the burden of losing what was most important to those who have survived disasters, wars, and conflict-zones. We aim to create new keepsakes and framed memories by offering free photos and photoshoots to those who have already been through so much.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We partner with organizations that are in place and working within communities that we can offer our services to. From disaster relief and community centers to refugee and immigrant services, we connect with groups and people who introduce us to those who have survived disasters and conflict. With utmost respect and sensitivity, we hear their stories and create unique photoshoots that produce beautiful photographs for them to have as new keepsakes and family heirlooms.
We meet with the survivors, we have the photoshoot, we edit the photographs, we print and frame them, and we deliver the final products to our recipients.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Retake is in a position to provide those who have survived wars and disasters with new photographs and keepsakes because we were founded by a photographer and visual journalist who has years of experience with nonprofits and working internationally. Our board and staff all have nonprofit backgrounds and working with people from other background's and countries. In addition, we understand the importance of the following values: empathy, cultural sensitivity, listening, and being respectful.
We also have a small team that keeps our overhead costs very low, so more of the funds raised go towards the recipients of our free photoshoots.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have been building relationships with organizations that have chapters and offices in different areas of the United States that we can work with as the need arises; we have spent the most time along the East Coast primarily in Washington, DC where many national organizations have their headquarters and in North Carolina where our base is. We will continue to grow in key areas where refugee communities are and where disasters in the United States happen regularly (the East Coast and Gulf Coast for hurricanes and the West Coast for earthquakes and wildfires).
Our next step will be international recipients in the Caribbean who have survived major storms for disaster survivor photoshoots.
And eventually globally for displaced people, refugees, and people who have been through a disaster.
