Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Cancer is a very expensive disease even with health insurance. It can create a very severe hardships causing patients to make difficult decisions about treatment as well as sacrificing other areas of life. Patients will often have to decide between putting food on the table, paying utilities late or not at all or whether or not to pay rent. That in turn, can create stress that inhibits a patient's ability to fight the disease effectively. Secondary lymphedema is often a complication of cancer. There is no cure for lymphedema and complications of it can be very difficult to manage including but not limited to trips to the hospital, excessive use of antibiotics, uncomfortable swelling and pain. One of the most basic treatments for lymphedema is compression garments which are frequently not covered by insurance companies. Those garments can be expensive and for someone who is already trying to manage other financial stresses, a person may go without the most basic managment.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Love of Lisa Cancer & Lymphedema fund's initial goals are to help 25 families per year with that financial stress by providing quarterly payments of $300 for those patients going through the treatment of cancer as well as provide financial assistance of up to $100 per patient for compression garments or possibly therapy treatment co-payments. Additionally, Love of Lisa Cancer & Lymphedema Fund is promoting a community support aspect through meetings, providing donated items to aid in managing symptoms related to treatments such as creams or lotions to help manage chemo and radiation side effects.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Love of Lisa Cancer & Lymphedema Fund intends on working with local cancer and lymphedema support systems to provide education, provide community support through monthly meetings, going out into the community and requesting donations of cash as well as other products and services that will assist cancer patients and lymphedema patients. Long term strategies would include working with other national based entities that can provide larger support networks and resources to assist patients in longer term planning and goals to help them past the initial diagnosis so that they may provide support in return to new patients.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Love of Lisa Cancer & Lymphedema Fund's founder is a cancer survivor. That provides our organization with a founder who has a great passion for helping others fighting cancer. An additional aspect of the founder is that she is a CPA and has established a comprehensive business plan as well as set forth goals to achieve. By remaining small and only serving the Northern Virginia area initially, it allows the organization to have a more focused plan structured around utilizing local vendors, community groups and resources.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have begun working with a local organization associated with our local hospital to assist paying for compression garments for patients in need. Contact is being made with a patient navigator at the local hospital, a Valley Hospital network to provide education and support regarding a local physician and procedure that can assist lymphedema patients with treatment to help manage the disorder. Silicone bracelets were provided for use by 50 patients to notify potential caregivers of potential limb restrictions.
