Pastors for NC Children

Mobilizing faith communities to advocate for public education

Raleigh, NC   |  http://pastorsforncchildren.org

Mission

Pastors for NC Children mobilizes faith communities to advocate for public education across North Carolina. We believe in equity for all students especially the most vulnerable, ending the school to prison/deportation pipeline, and ensuring children have the opportunities necessary to flourish. We believe supporting public education is at the heart of how we are called to love our neighbors and care for the children and vulnerable in our communities because public schools serve the vast majority of children. We believe public money should only support public schools that are held accountable by elected school boards and the state. We believe public schools are a common good.

Mission Amplify is the first initiative of Pastors for NC Children. It provides church groups and community organizations the opportunity to participate in supporting public education through a letter writing campaign to NC Legislators.

While congregations are often doing good work helping local schools in their communities, there is not a broad concerted effort to engage faith communities in systemic, state level change. PNCC aims to bridge that gap. Mission Amplify is the way we are mobilizing and connecting congregations to this work for systemic change and social transformation. We hear over and over that people care and want to do something, but they are overwhelmed and don’t know where to start: they do not understand the underlying issues at play at the local, state, and federal levels and how things are all connected. We want to provide that education and opportunity for engagement.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
