Creating a period-poverty-free state.

Mission

At Free Flow NM, we aim to help end period poverty in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico. We believe that period products should be as accessible as toilet paper, and no one should miss school, work, or daily activities due to lack of access to menstrual products. Period poverty means millions of individuals with periods are subjected to injustice and inequity due to menstruation. There is no federal program that assists with the costs of period products. EBT, WIC, SNAP do not cover menstrual products; they are considered luxury items. Consequently, 1 in 3 low-income menstruators report missing work, school, or similar events due to inadequate access to period supplies. By providing period products we aim to bridge this gap, so individuals can remain engaged in careers and school.

Menstrual Product Distribution

General Distribution Program
Each month volunteers work together to build 300 kits filled with a monthly supply of menstrual materials. The kits are distributed by over 45 different community organizations. Upon request, products can also be obtained through home delivery

Population(s) Served

Our Period Pods are similar to the Little Libraries you see in your community, but instead of books, the Pods are filled with our period kits. These innovative pods provide year-round 24-hour access to period products, ensuring that anyone in need can obtain them with complete anonymity. There are no forms to fill out or registration required, making it easy and hassle-free for individuals to access the products they need when they need them. An artist from the community uniquely paints each Pod while all volunteer groups known as Pod Tenders oversee the management of these Pods. We currently have four pods in Santa Fe that distribute 400 period kits per month.

Population(s) Served

As part of our commitment to sustainability and providing long-term solutions, each recipient of a period kit also receives an offer for complimentary reusable products, including period cups, period underwear, and reusable pads. This initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens and mitigate obstacles associated with purchasing such items. At the same time, providing a solution that can alleviate the need for disposable products for 3-15 years depending on the products chosen. By incorporating these reusable options into our program, we not only address immediate period needs but also empower individuals to make environmentally conscious choices and achieve greater financial independence.

Population(s) Served

Discovering suitable menstrual products can significantly impact individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions, such as autism, intellectual disability, and cerebral palsy. Many of these individuals struggle with changes in routine and sensory sensitivities related to menstruation. Research indicates individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions often prefer period underwear due to its comfort and convenience. In response, Free Flow has launched its latest program, which aims to provide 5 pairs of period underwear to students in the Special Education program. This initiative seeks to offer a practical and comfortable solution to menstrual care for these students, promoting their well-being and dignity.
