The Transgender, Gender Variant, Intersex Justice Project's (TGIJP's) works to challenge and end the human rights abuses committed against transgender, gender variant, and intersex people, particularly against Black and transgender women of color, in California prisons, jails, detention centers, and beyond.

Melanie Eleneke Grassroots Re-Entry Socio-Economic Program

The Melanie Eleneke Re-Entry Socio-Economic Program enables our formerly incarcerated black and brown trans members to gain part time employment training in job skills that can be of assistance for them in the workforce. It also provides leadership development and legal/support services to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated transgender persons. The program also assist with educational training for education advancement through linking with local community colleges, adult eduction program by other non-profits, and education mentors. This is a multi month program that enrolls up to 10 individuals per year and participants are guided and held accountable for their progress.

Housing and shelter is vital to health. TGIJP Housing Program assist clients with transitional housing and permanent housing options. A subsidiary of our Housing Program is Our Trans Home housing program, which provides housing subsidies, transitional housing, comprehensive housing case management and supportive services, and locating and securing actual housing for the most vulnerable transgender community members in San Francisco.

Our Legal Program provides legal services to both incarcerated transgender people, but also provided legal services to people who were released from incarceration but still needed legal support, and ultimately to have a legal services program for transgender people that also fostered long-term change in the legal system and provided policy and legislation solutions influenced by input from incarcerated transgender people to make systematic change.

TGIJP’s new Wellness Program, centering Black, Black and Brown, formerly incarcerated and system-involved transgender, gender nonconforming and intersex communities, and provides mental health, substance use services, leadership development training, life skills workshops, employment services, and broader supportive services. The program will offer a menu of services focusing on the overall mental health needs of the community, including therapy, group sessions, case management, life skills workshops, substance use services, and healing justice offerings to ensure that needs are met. The menu of services will be supported through a range of options, including therapists, coaches, trainers, consultants, contractors, and community members.
