What we aim to solve
Many local government boards and commissions have lost focus on the original purpose for which they were created. Several have wandered so far as to be engaging in social engineering experiments, instead of their stated core missions. The best example is Bayou Vermilion District, whose purpose is to keep the Vermilion River running clean and clear. They were deficit spending over $1 million a year to promote social justice issues, while homes and businesses along the river were flooding.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
New Louisiana Foundation is a 501c3 established for research and citizen education in an effort to make Louisiana’s government more community focused.
Its primary purpose is to train average citizens how to be effective volunteers inside their local government. We do this by identifying volunteer positions available on area boards and commissions and matching them to identified, local community members.
Once appointed, we ensure they have all of the tools necessary to be effective board members or commissioners. These include providing enabling legislation, board bylaws, and standing rules. Additional training and mentorship is also made available on becoming more effective. These include identifying and ensuring focus on the board’s core purpose, effective oversight of the board-selected executive director, and more.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We collect and maintain a list of every board and commission member in the Louisiana parishes where we operate. As we monitor openings on these boards, we connect qualified volunteers, and walk them them through the application process.
