Rainbow Acres
Promising Futures for Adults with Developmental Disabilities
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Rainbow Acres addresses our society's growing need for residential communities that provide a safe, loving and enriching environment where adults with developmental disabilities can lead satisfying lives and achieve their fullest potential. Each year, thousands of families across the U.S. grapple with helping a loved one with developmental disabilities make living decisions as they enter adulthood and want more independence and opportunities for personal growth.
Nationwide, residential programs that serve developmentally disabled adults are increasingly strained as the need has increased due to the rise in Autism and other factors – and as those with disabilities live longer. Many states have closed group homes and halted vocational training for the developmentally disabled. Rainbow Acres helps to address this issue by providing a thriving residential community that continues to grow and flourish in response to the needs and desires of its residents.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Program Overview
Rainbow Acres is a Christian residential community with a wide range of programs for developmentally disabled adults. These programs serve residents (called "Ranchers”) who hail from more than 15 U.S. states and represent all types of faith backgrounds. Located in Arizona’s scenic Verde Valley, the 50-acre ranch that is home to Rainbow Acres serves adults with a wide range of developmental disabilities that may commonly include Autism, Down Syndrome, Asperger Syndrome, and Developmental Delay from various causes. Ranchers range from 18 years of age to well into their 80’s.
Core programs address the immediate and long-term needs of the Ranchers in vital developmental areas: cognitive, vocational, physical/health, spiritual and social. Our professional educators and staff members are passionate about helping Ranchers develop to their full potential, and are experienced in successfully teaching individuals across a wide range of ability and learning styles. Our goal is to strengthen and enhance the cognitive abilities of each Rancher, and to help them gain confidence in their abilities.
At Rainbow Acres, everything is centered on the Ranchers, as they experience:
– Opportunities for personal growth
– Freedom of choice
– A sense of independence with the security of professional and compassionate care
– Empowerment to achieve personal goals
– Friends who accept them unconditionally
– Paths to discover their purpose in life
– A safe home full of inspiring programs, joyous exploration and endless encouragement
Life Skills Programs
The Worden Taber Center accommodates our academic classrooms, where educators provide lessons in an array of topics including "Project Discovery" life skills courses such as Self Esteem, Teamwork and Time Management. Working as a group on common concepts, and individually based on ability, we strive to engage each Rancher in these key areas. The Worden Taber Center houses the Computer Lab, equipped with 16 computer work stations. Ranchers are able to learn basic computer skills and how to apply them for classwork, games, and other possibilities, and to stay in touch with their families. Our Fine Arts program allows Ranchers to create paintings that are all their own with the help of skilled art instructors. Music instruction opens pathways to self-expression through the Yamaha Clavinova Connection program. Life Skills training is built into the everyday experience of being a Rancher. Caregivers and staff are always helping the Ranchers learn basic tasks (big and small) so they are empowered and meaningfully engaged in daily living. Rainbow Acres also provides workshops on social skills, self-care skills, and other life
Vocational Programs
Vocational training is an important part of life at Rainbow Acres. Having a job, a skill set, and a reason to get up every day has a huge effect on Rancher pride and self-esteem. Utilizing "Project Discovery" curriculum, we offer a number of opportunities for Ranchers to learn and perfect a skill, and to meaningfully contribute to the community. Every day, Ranchers rotate through a series of courses and activities that provide focused learning on a task or skill of interest. Each exercise has a staff leader who oversees the activity and provides help and guidance as needed, focusing on skill areas including kitchen service, gardening and animal care. Many Ranchers also have the opportunity for employment at businesses in neighboring communities. Employment opportunities include restaurants, grocery stores, and churches, recycling facilities, national parks and more. Each Rancher receives personalized vocational counseling and instruction, assuring that they find success in positions they love. Ranchers celebrate each other’s contributions to the community and encourage personal growth and success.
Physical/Health Programs
In addition to the physical activity involved in working as part of a crew, Ranchers enjoy a variety of physical activities including fitness classes, aerobics, walking, hiking, bicycling and dance – or a visit to Rainbow Acres’ popular fitness room with free weights, strength machines, stationary bikes and treadmills. On any morning or evening, individual and small groups can be seen walking or biking around the beautiful campus, which is surrounded by Arizona’s scenic Verde Valley. For Health and Wellness, Rainbow Acres has a team of dedicated professionals who provide holistic care to Ranchers to support a physically-thriving community. A dedicated nursing staff keeps Ranchers healthy and happy by coordinating medical appointments, overseeing medications, and caring for their needs. In addition, the nursing staff partners with health professionals to address therapeutic needs including physical and occupational therapy (as rehabilitation and to learn adaptive ways to address challenges); and speech therapy (to improve deficiencies and learn tools for overcoming communication
Spiritual Programs
Rainbow Acres is a Christian residential community that nurtures its Ranchers based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, yet we are also welcoming and inclusive of people of all beliefs. We strive to be supportive of the spiritual choices and faith traditions of each individual and family. Christian values and practices are integrated into the culture of Rainbow Acres, such as mealtime prayer and behavioral guidelines based on the Golden Rule; however, participation in spiritual life activities is optional. On campus, Ranchers can choose from a variety of activities: daily Prayer Circle, weekly Bible study and monthly Prayer and Praise Service. Our Chaplaincy Coordinator oversees spiritual life activities and pastoral care services. Off campus, Ranchers are encouraged to worship in the local community. We provide transportation and supervision for Ranchers to attend local churches. We believe that spirituality is important to the well-being and health of our Ranchers. We encourage every Rancher to have a rich spiritual life, to grow in their faith, and to use their spiritual gifts for the benefit of the community.
Social Programs
Experiencing new things, enjoying favorite activities and having fun together are important parts of a full life. Rainbow Acres offers a wide range of social and recreational activities for Ranchers that help expand their horizons. Indoor recreational activities include pool, ping-pong, air hockey, a piano, indoor basketball and social TV areas. Organized activities include dances, talent shows, assemblies, movie time, bingo, plays, performances and special events. Outdoors, a basketball court, exercise stations, walking/biking paths, a bocce ball court, and a field area are popular for games and activities. The equestrian program provides Ranchers with access to horses for petting and riding. During summer months, Ranchers enjoy swimming in the pool with friends and Caregivers. Many Ranchers practice and perform regionally in the Rainbow Acres choir and compete in Special Olympics competitions. Group hikes, shopping trips, theatrical and sporting events, holiday celebrations and other activities ensure that there’s always an array of programs and activities being offered.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Finding a long-term living solution for a loved one with developmental disabilities is a significant milestone, and often an emotional undertaking. The overriding goal of Rainbow Acres is to provide a wonderful alternative to families facing this choice: a Christian community that empowers persons with developmental disabilities to live to their fullest potential with dignity and purpose.
Our residents, called Ranchers, are valued as individuals. Our goal is to help every Rancher learn cognitive, vocational, physical, spiritual and social skills they can utilize on a daily basis as valued members of the community. Each Rancher is important, well known by Caregivers and staff, and supported to live a happy and full life. Ranchers live, work and socialize with their peers in a safe and loving community at a place they call home. Ranging in age from 18-20 and 80+ years old, each Rancher is empowered to find meaningful work, discover personal interests, and find purpose in their lives. Rainbow Acres is anchored in the core values of love, hope, compassion and faith. These values define our culture and manifest in an authentic, friendly community that is filled with remarkable joy and growth.

Through living at Rainbow Acres, Ranchers and their families often feel that they have accomplished more than they ever imagined possible. The strategies engaged by Rainbow Acres provide ample opportunities to empower persons with developmental disabilities.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Rainbow Acres is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that provides a fully licensed, private-pay assisted living community for individuals 18 years and above with developmental disabilities. Rainbow Acres employs over 70 people, including caregivers, administration, program staff and support staff. Licensed by the State of Arizona Department of Health Services, Rainbow Acres is governed by an independent Board of Trustees and regulated by state and county health, environmental and transportation agencies.
Surrounded by five Arizona State Parks in the heart of Arizona's Verde Valley, Rainbow Acres offers a unique, peaceful environment full of nature and beauty on its 10-acre grounds. Residential facilities include 12 homes, each with 10 private bedrooms and a Caregiver suite, and 8 one-bedroom apartments that allow a greater degree of independence for Ranchers who meet rigorous requirements of self-management.
The Palmer Community Center is a marvelous blend of beauty and practicality at the heart of the campus. A complete commercial kitchen with professionals at the helm is where all foods are ordered and most are prepared. Congregate meals are served at midday in the dining area and for special evening events, while most evening meals are prepared in the kitchen and then catered to the Rancher houses to be finalized and served family style. Several staff offices are in the Palmer Center, as is the popular Roadrunner Fitness Center. Rancher talent shows, movies, dances, classes, meetings and performances by various entertainers also take place in the Palmer Community Center's large Rainbow Hall and smaller Celebration Hall.
In addition, the Rainbow Health and Wellness Center is a hub of activity where a team of nurses and our medical records coordinator take care of appointments to various doctors and specialists, oversee nutrition and weight goals, and manage the overall physical and emotional health needs of each Rancher.
Other facilities accommodate activities, hobbies, communications, recreational activities:
– The Worden Lifelong Learning Center, with a classroom, a teaching kitchen, a painting studio, an onsite radio station, and a computer lab
– The Daehler Building, with multiple craft rooms, a recreation room, and a sleeping loft for mission groups
– A fitness room with free weights, strength machines, stationary bikes and treadmills
– A modern, well-equipped barn with stables, a round pen for training, and a riding arena
– Trails for walkers, bicyclers and experienced horseback riders
– Three greenhouses and a small orchard
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Rainbow Acres determines success through a number of indicators. First, customer satisfaction surveys, occupancy rates, resident turnover rates and staff turnover rates all serve as positive indicators from our key stakeholders that Rainbow Acres is on the right track. Rainbow Acres staff regularly attend a variety of industry meetings to learn about best practices from our colleagues in the assisted living field. We enjoy an excellent relationship with the Arizona chapter of the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), which provides us with an excellent window into the world of caring for developmentally disabled adults. Through these relationships and training opportunities, staff are able to gauge our strengths and weaknesses, as compared to similar facilities. Using what we have learned, our Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and our All Staff meeting processes enable us to implement new ideas throughout the Rainbow Acres system.
Rainbow also has built significant relationships within the United Methodist Association and its EAGLE accreditation process. Through the EAGLE commission, we have gained valuable insight into similar organizations. With this insight we have educated Rainbow's senior staff about trends and patterns within our industry, and assisted Rainbow toward our pursuit of service excellence and total customer satisfaction.
In regard to “what's next" for Rainbow Acres, we have traditionally implemented a five-year planning process, with yearly updates made by staff and a committee of the Board of Trustees. The Strategic Plan enables Rainbow Acres to focus on those priorities that will have the greatest impact on the quality of life for the Ranchers. The Board approves the Strategic Plan and monitors the progress of the CEO, who in turn directs the senior staff on the plan's goals and objectives. Staff members align their priorities to the key criteria for enhancing performance and how they can assist in achieving the goals of retaining current Ranchers and attracting additional Ranchers to join Rainbow Acres and become part of the campus community. Rainbow Acres will undertake this year's long-range planning effort at the April 2019 board meeting.
