What we aim to solve
We believe safe homes and vibrant communities are key social determinants of healthy living and successful families. Working at the critical intersection of health and housing, we provide free critical home repairs, safety modifications and energy-efficient improvements for low-income seniors, families, veterans and disabled individuals. Our work in distressed neighborhoods preserves healthy, safe, and affordable housing, facilitates comfortable aging-in-place, and enhances quality of life. Creating safe and healthy homes through free home safety modifications is at the very heart of RTVOS’ mission. For nearly 30 years, we have offered our no-cost services to individual homeowners, non-profit facilities, and communities throughout Arizona. Our services significantly reduce the risk of injury, create healthy living conditions, preserve affordable homes for seniors, and improve quality of life.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
National Rebuilding Day
Every year in April, RTVOS participates in National Rebuilding Day and chooses one neighborhood for our efforts. RTVOS staff recruits and organizes skilled and semiskilled volunteers (500+) to make critical repairs, paint homes, and conduct general cleanup and restoration projects. Historically, we have selected various neighborhoods from throughout the Phoenix Metro area and the collective impact spreads throughout various communities (including our target neighborhood).
we identify a neighborhood and meet with homeowners to discuss basic repair, rehabilitation, and revitalization needs they have. We do this in conjunction with our other 200 affiliate offices across the country. Projects including painting, landscaping, minor home repair, and much more.
Safe @ Home: Senior Fall Prevention Services
Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun (RTVOS) engages community partners and volunteers to fulfill our mission of revitalizing communities and transforming lives. By providing FREE critical home repairs, installing wheelchair ramps, and making home fall prevention safety modifications for those most in need and least able to afford it, we create safe, comfortable homes allowing low-income seniors, veterans, and disabled/mobility-impaired individuals to remain in their own homes and age
safely in place.
Our work restores independence and dignity, preserves home values and equity, and increases peace of mind and pride of ownership through the following programs:
The Safe & Healthy Home program (the SHH Program) includes Senior Fall Prevention Services and the Arizona Ramp Project. This Program serves low and very-low-income homeowners and is designed to increase mobility, dignity and independence, while reducing falls throughout the at-risk population.
Elevando Community Revitalization Program
The Elevando Community Revitalization Program serves low and very-low income homeowners in need of critical home repairs. Through the rehabilitation of interior/exterior living spaces, this program restores homes to basic but safe living conditions creating a healthier home environment.
The program improves health outcomes, preserves home equity, and restores dignity. This program serves low-income families with resident children and/or seniors who are at increased risk of environmentally-influenced health problems created by unsafe or unsanitary living conditions.
Special Community Volunteer Projects
Year round, we partner with local, regional and national businesses and groups to identify needed projects in our community (houses, community centers, non-profits, etc.). We then bring our partners together with the needed homeowners, families, and organizations and provide project management for the event. We manage everything from waivers, to food, to materials and tools, to engaging professional trades. Each project has a unique scope of work and budget.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our vision is to help build a strong, diverse, safe, and vibrant community by working to rehabilitate owner occupied homes, revitalize neighborhoods and foster a strong sense of place and pride for low to moderate income residents. Our plan makes use of strong community revitalization partnerships and is a coordinated approach between Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun and local residents, municipalities, nonprofits, businesses, foundations, and other partner organizations to build and sustain a safe, healthy and
thriving community.
RTVOS uses a community based and volunteer driven approach to create an asset building model of sustainability. Our goal is to create sustainable impacts throughout the community by focusing on assets within the community itself. Through the rehabilitation of individual homes and community spaces using local volunteers from faith based and vested business partners, we develop relationships with the residents and create an investment mentality within the community. The citizens and community associations of a neighborhood are its
greatest asset. When we cultivate pride of ownership and vest homeowners and residents in outcomes, we help move the needle toward meaningful change.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our work restores independence and dignity, preserves home values and equity, and increases peace of mind and pride of ownership through the following programs:
The Safe & Healthy Home program (SHH Program) includes Senior Fall Prevention Services and the RampUp! Arizona Project. This Program serves low and very-low-income homeowners and is designed to increase mobility, dignity and independence, while reducing falls
throughout the at- risk population.
The Elevando Community Revitalization Project targets distressed neighborhoods and serves low and very-low income homeowners as well as community facilities in need of critical repairs. Through the rehabilitation and renovation of both the interior and exterior of homes, and the revitalization of neighborhood facilities and community spaces, this program restores basic but safe conditions to entire neighborhoods, creating a healthier living environment. The program improves health equity and outcomes, preserves affordable housing, increases home
equity, and restores dignity. This program specifically targets owner-occupied homes for families with resident children and/or seniors who are at increased risk of environmentally-influenced health problems created by unsafe or unsanitary living conditions.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
As our population ages, the need for our services increases proportionately and we are rising to the challenge. In FY 2018, we doubled our critical home repair budget to meet the rising need and additional demand for service from low income senior and veteran homeowners.
Currently, no other nonprofit organization in Arizona provides FREE critical home repairs and fall prevention modifications for low-income senior and/or veteran homeowners. Other programs do exist to provide repair services but either require payment or involve 'sweat equity'. All homeowners accepted into our Programs are unable to either financially or physically (and many times both) make repairs to ensure a safe and healthy home. We do not charge a fee for our services. Our goal is not to build new affordable housing. Our goal is to preserve it, rebuild home equity (and by extension, wealth) for existing homeowners, and allow them the to age safely in place.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 1991, RTVOS has engaged more than 70,000 volunteers from nearly 500 organizations throughout Arizona. Our philanthropic efforts have resulted in $9 million worth of critical repairs and home safety modifications for more than 2,100 homes and 62 nonprofit facilities.
By providing FREE critical home repairs, installing wheelchair ramps, and making home fall prevention safety modifications for those most in need and least able to afford it, we create safe, comfortable homes allowing low income families, seniors, veterans, and disabled/mobility impaired individuals to remain comfortably in their own homes and age safely in place.
