The MISS Foundation
MISS Foundation, a community of compassion and hope for grieving families
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The MISS Foundation receives thousands of requests for help each year. With a small staff and often limited resources, a more skilled network of specially trained individuals in traumatic grief was needed. To address this problem, in 2014, we started a training program for top-level providers who work with families experiencing the death of a child or loved one. We now have a network of nearly 700 trained providers worldwide who we refer our families to in their own communities. Many bereaved people however need additional, more focused support than what we are able to provide locally. For these individuals, we have established Andy’s Sanctuary at the Selah Carefarm, which is specifically geared for helping the traumatically bereaved. It provides a safe, caring place for bereaved families to find the support they need. It also allows the MISS Foundation to serve more people each year in a compassionate, therapeutic, carefarm community.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
MISS Foundation Programs
Retreats for Traumatic Grief, Support Groups, Mentor Program, Online Forums, Counseling Program, Counseling Intensives, Family Support Services, MISSing Angels Bill and other advocacy efforts, Compassionate Bereavement Certification and Training, The International Kindness Project, Kindness Walks, Andy's Sanctuary (respite center), and the Selah Carefarm Program.
MISS Foundation Retreats at the Selah Carefarm
Contemplative retreats for the traumatically bereaved are held at the Selah Carefarm near Sedona, Arizona. The retreats provide a safe place for bereaved individuals to come together and remember their loved ones in a supportive environment with others who have experienced similar losses. Selah retreats are facilitated by specially trained leaders in traumatic grief.
Compassionate Bereavement Care Training and Certification
Our Compassionate Bereavement Care Training and Certification Program allows us to reach out to local communities all over the world. The certification program led by Dr. Joanne Cacciatore began in 2014. To date, we’ve trained nearly 700 providers from 14 countries and throughout the U.S. to provide appropriate and compassionate care in their own communities to families who have a child who is dying or who has died. Those who qualify as CBC Providers in our network are specifically trained in trauma and loss. They include, among others, top-level physicians, mental health care providers, nurses, social workers, funeral directors, therapists, clergy and first responders.
General Support Programs
In addition to serving countless new families, we helped thousands more through our support groups, mentor network, counseling, and online forums. We held regular support groups (virtual and in person) that provided a place of comfort and healing for grieving family members. We provided free and affordable counseling to those in need, totaling more than $426,000 of in-kind services. We helped families connect with other families experiencing child death and traumatic grief through 24/7 access to private and secure online forums. Visitors from around the world visited the Selah Carefarm for counseling intensives, retreats and support services with our specially trained traumatic grief counselors.
Community Programs and Family Support
MISS Foundation families raised awareness and funds in honor of their children to build the respite center, known as Andy's Sanctuary, at the Selah Carefarm. It opened in 2021. We hosted events like International Kindness Project Day and the Selah Retreat. Dr. Joanne Cacciatore, MISS Foundation Founder, along with our traumatic grief counselors, worked year round with bereaved families through support programs, counseling intensives and group retreats at the carefarm.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We believe it's essential to provide safe, non-pathologized, community-based support for those suffering traumatic grief. The MISS Foundation provides counseling, advocacy, research, education, and support to thousands of grieving families through mentoring, support groups, online forums, counseling programs, retreats, and more. Our programs are highly effective and backed by scientific research. However, we've found that in some cases much more specialized care is necessary to help these families cope with the overwhelming experience of loss as they move through the traumatic grief process.
Our respite center, Andy's Sanctuary, opened in 2021 at the Selah Carefarm in Cornville, AZ. The Selah Carefarm, a program of the MISS Foundation, is the first carefarm in the U.S. to specifically treat the traumatically bereaved. This vital project is helping to change the course of how traumatized and bereaved individuals are treated in the U.S. It provides a safe place for grieving people to feel, to remember, and to connect to a community. It also provides vital training to providers in fields caring for those who have experienced the death of a child.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategy is simple. We will continue with our effective bereavement programs in communities throughout the world, while including the carefarm and respite center model as a primary focus in our programming. Despite the high incidence of traumatic grief in communities around the world, no place like this exists anywhere. Andy's Sanctuary and the Selah Carefarm offer a dramatically different approach to traumatic grief than traditional Western treatment facilities, which often focus on diagnosing and medicating people who are deeply grieving rather than supporting them in their grief with healthier, effective, less stigmatizing methods.
We focus on three main areas of support:
1. Carefarming, which includes offerings such as gardening and therapeutic horticulture, animal therapy, rescue animal caregiving, green recreation, landscape maintenance, and ecotherapy;
2. Contemplative practices which include meditation/centering prayer, mindfulness based support groups, bibliotherapy, grounding, and ritual;
3. Physical well-being which includes physical activity, psychoeducation around sleep hygiene, healthy eating, stress resilience, and traumatic grief counseling.
Andy's Sanctuary and the Selah Carefarm are on 10 acres of beautiful farmland just outside of Sedona, Arizona. All of our providers who help families at the Selah Carefarm receive specialized training in traumatic grief.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The MISS Foundation, with 25 years of experience serving bereaved families, has a stable annual operating budget and a sound financial history, along with a consistent board of directors and an executive director of nearly 10 years. We have almost 700 trained providers, as well as volunteers throughout the U.S. and in 14 countries. Our founder, Dr. Joanne Cacciatore, is a respected researcher, professor, author and speaker who has dedicated her life to serving bereaved families and rescuing and caring for animals. Funding for our programs include grants, individual donations, corporate contributions and program fees.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
For 25 years, the MISS Foundation, a 501(C)3 nonprofit, has helped families suffering the most traumatic loss of all, the death of their child. Each year we directly help approximately 1200 newly bereaved families. We provide free and affordable counseling to those in need, totaling more than $426,000 of in-kind services in this year alone. We serve thousands more through our local support groups, mentor network and online forums. Through our Compassionate Bereavement Care program, we reach out to countless local communities, training nearly 700 providers to date to support families in their own communities who have a child who is dying or who has died. We also embarked on one of our most significant projects to date – the building and opening of our respite center, Andy's Sanctuary, at the Selah Carefarm near Sedona AZ. The Selah Carefarm is the first green carefarm in the United States specifically designed to serve traumatized and bereaved families. We started welcoming families to Andy's Sanctuary in 2021. Funds were raised over 3.5 years to build the respite center. It now regularly serves more families throughout the year in need of specialized care and support. The respite center overlooks 10-acres of beautiful farmland with 47 rescue animals.
